Great day trip in Bijagua - Really great experience enjoying the beauty of the Costa Rican rainforest. Our driver and the guides at the nature area and the coffee demonstration were all excellent. They were very knowledgeable and patient with our group of 3. The sloths did not disappoint and seeing the spider monkeys and poison dart frogs added to the amazement. The waterfall was a pretty as the steps were steep. We stopped to have a meal at El Sabor de Dona Carmen and the cosada was delicious. All in all a great day.

Trip of a lifetime! - I found On The Road Costa Rica from a Facebook group I joined while researching for our CR visit. I am delighted I messaged them! From the initial text this company was 100% responsive and “on the ball”.
We initially used OTRCR for our airport pickup. That in itself was impressive as our arrival changed several times due to airline problems!
We hadn’t booked any excursions - we had decided we’d go with the flow for this first CR trip. While we were looking at the hotel’s offerings, I decided to do some comparison shopping. Not only was OTRCR less expensive, but the trip was private! We are getting old and less adventurous, so groups are not our thing.
Our driver/guide was awesome and each of the experiences were AMAZING! I highly recommend using On The Road Costa Rica for ALL your travel needs!

Way way better than I expected - I had very low expectations going in, but it was beyond amazing. The waterfall was beautiful and huge and the water refreshing. The sloth encounter had two sloths up close and totally cute. The coffee/cacao experience let me get close to coffee and cacao plants and taste coffee cherries and then taste their brewed coffee and a hot chocolate drink that was very pure. Jafet was my driver and he was super friendly and helped me with my Spanish on the way to these different places. I wound up going alone which I felt kind of weird doing but it was fine. Checked the boxes of all the things I wanted to do in Costa Rica in basically one morning. Was awesome.

A day that touched our hearts—pure magic from start to finish. Highly, highly recommended!😍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - This unique and beautiful jungle experience was the absolute highlight of our honeymoon.😍 It’s a completely private tour! That means when you book— whether as a couple, a family, or a group — it’s just your group on site with the guide/ tour leader and driver. We absolutely appreciated this!
It started with us being picked up in Tamarindo at our Hotel Lobby by an extremely friendly and very knowledgeable driver. His name was Fernando. He drove an SUV. It was a very comfortable ride, air-conditioned, and simply pleasant. He answered all our questions, was funny and created a very relaxed atmosphere during the day. He was also happy to stop if we needed a break. In about two and a half hours, we reached the rainforest… and experiencing it in person just completely blew us away.🥰
On the way, we even passed by a volcano, and Fernando always gave us short explanations about the local area. So in a way, we already had a mini-tour during the drive. And in the rainforest—it was simply phenomenal. Honestly, I would do this tour a second or even third time. I was so amazed at how beautiful everything was.
Right at the start, we saw monkeys—spider monkeys and, we believe, howler monkeys, which are the largest monkeys in the region.🐒 Seeing them so close was a blessing. We could take photos anywhere we liked. Then we went deeper into the rainforest—it was indeed a hike through it—and everywhere we looked, we saw the animals we had hoped to spot. We were incredibly lucky to see sloths on the ground, which is quite rare, as they are often high up in the treetops. We even saw a baby sloth.
We also saw frogs, a snake, various bird species, and of course the extraordinary plants and towering trees of the rainforest. This is truly unique—there is nothing like it if you haven’t experienced it before. Being there fills you with joy, grounds you, and connects you deeply to nature. Our jungle guide Fabio knew everything about the wildlife and plants, and we could ask as many questions as we wanted. Walking through the rainforest, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation, was both grounding and inspiring. 🙏
After about 1.5 hours tour in the jungle, we visited a coffee and cacao plantation just a short walk away. As Swiss people, we’re from a country that drinks a lot of coffee and produces chocolate—so seeing everything at its source, understanding what it means, and what it looks like, was a truly valuable experience. I think it’s important to know where the products we consume daily come from and how they grow. We bought a large amount of coffee there, as well as other souvenirs.
A tasty Costa Rican lunch followed, along with a visit to a butterfly garden where one butterfly even landed on my head! 🦋Everything felt warm, local, and welcoming. Finally, we drove to a beautiful waterfall for a refreshing swim before heading back, arriving home around 4/5 p.m., happy beyond words. Everything on this tour felt so local, homely, warm, and welcoming everywhere we went. Thank you SO SO much for that! 🫶🏼 We were happier than ever to have experienced such a wonderful day.
We can only say thank you for this one-of-a-kind opportunity, for the warm hospitality—especially from our driver Fernando, our jungle guide Fabio, and Chris at the plantation. You gave us an unforgettable experience that we will look back on for a long time. We have beautiful photos and memories, and even two days later we are still processing it all and actually considering going back to the jungle once more before we leave.😊
We truly hope that this detailed review will help inspire more people to book and discover this wonderful tour for themselves. I believe every tour is a little unique—because you can’t completely plan which animals you will see, where they will be, or how many there will be. But that’s exactly what makes it so special.✨
From the bottom of our hearts—until next time. Thank you to all of you. We can only highly, highly recommend you. It was simply top, top, top quality.🦜🐸🦥🦋🐍🌺🌴🌱🌿

Once in a lifetime experience! - The tour was fantastic- everything was great but the nature walk and lunch was a definite highlight. The guides were so knowledgeable and clearly interested in protecting the surrounding wildlife, we lucked out and got to see so much interesting wildlife (young sloth, colourful tree frogs, edible and medicinal plants, beautiful birds, etc), and the lunch was delicious! The waterfall and surrounding area was beautiful and I loved getting to see and sample the local coffee and chocolate from "bean to bar/mug"!
Our tour guide for the trip, Livingston, was also amazing, and I loved all the information he shared about Costa Rica while we were on the road.

Expensive for not being able to enjoy the falls - Fernando was an excellent driver for our tour. He took us up into the mountains to reach the rainforest, and we really enjoyed the scenery and his commentary along the way. Once we arrived, we were connected with a guide who led us on a short, easy hike through the rainforest. We saw a viper, spiders, poisonous frogs, a toucan, and even a sloth. It was a fascinating experience, though a bit unnerving at times since you’d never spot most of these creatures without a guide. Ours was fantastic at pointing them out.
The next part of the trip was a visit to a coffee and cocoa plantation where we got to make our own traditional coffee and chocolate drink, the way indigenous people once did. We also bought some coffee before leaving.
Our last stop was the waterfalls, which unfortunately were closed and muddy. I wish an alternative stop had been offered since it felt like wasted time going there.
My only real complaint is the cost. The tour was $340 for two people (and that was with a discount), which seemed a bit steep compared to similar tours we’ve done through Viator in other countries. Overall, I’d say it’s worth considering during the dry season when the falls are open and look more like the photos on the website.
