Highlights
  • Former French Concession - In 1936, half of Shanghai was controlled by foreign powers. For decades, its had a negative birth rate and millions of immigrants, meaning the inheritance of the true cuisine of old Shanghai is limited to select insiders. On this tour, you’ll try at least 10 dishes on a journey through the clandestine cuisine of old-Shanghai, hiding in plain sight in the French Concession.
  • Huijin Shopping Mall(Zhao Jia bang road) - Xiaolongbao (local for soup dumplings) are Shanghai’s most famous claim to fame, but do you know how to tell the good from the great? We’ll let you know at our favorite local dumpling joint that can compete with the touristy Michelin recommended restaurants.
  • Shanxi Road (S) - Scallion noodles, dumplings with sesame sauce, local curry, and more! Don’t forget to check out the kitchen on your way in, the labor intensive pan-fried-bun making process has been selected as Local Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Xiangyang South Road 510 Long Unit - Two words: Pork Belly. Shanghai’s favorite dish takes an entire day to prepare, and for a good reason. Enjoy this plus other “only in Shanghai” dishes that celebrate quality ingredients with fresh preparation.
  • Ruijin Er Lu (Ruijin Second Road) - End the night with a locally made craft beer and enjoy the new modern feel Shanghai is known for around the world. The brewery is 10 10-minute walk away from South Shaanxi Road Subway Station.
  • Xiangyang Road (S) - Driven by a passion for dessert and community spirit, the Shanghainese owner of this cozy shop caters to the local neighborhood, crafting fresh desserts without pre-made shortcuts. Fresh mango atop chilled sago cream with a dash of pomelo…we’re drooling already!

Fabulous food tour and walk through hidden corners of the former French Concession - Thank you to our tour guide Emma and to Lost Plates for an amazing food tour. We loved all the food options and the nighttime walk through the former French Concession was magical. We would never have found all the hidden alleys on our own. Highly recommended!

Amazing Food Tour, thanks Sam! - I want to firstly say a massive thank you to our wonderful tour guide Sam! She was amazing and looked after our every need, from answering our questions to sorting vegetarian friendly meals, she was amazing. She also took the time to make sure that we got back to our hotel safely, helping to arrange taxis for us. For this and the whole night she organised, we are very grateful. We had a wonderful night, thank you Sam, you’re amazing!

So much delicious food! - We always like doing a food tour in every city we visit, it's a great way to learn about the city and the food! We did a Lost Plate tour in Chengdu and loved it so much we did another tour with them in Xi'an, then moved towards the Beijing tour as well, so naturally, we had to finish it off with the Shanghai Tour. While the tour guides might be different in each city - and the food locations - but the standard remains the same. We always got too much food and we always visited places that we would have never walked into by ourselves. Samantha was already waiting at our meet up point when we got there! She was super friendly and very knowledgeable of all the places that we have been traveling through in China. We started off with some delicious dumplings at a local restaurant. It was hard to decide which stop was the best, because all the food that was provided to us was delicious. Samantha was a great guide and made sure we were well taken care of. She also sat down and enjoyed the food with us - which was much more welcoming than the other tour guides who opted to not eat with us (we get it... they do this trip a lot - eating the same food every day would be tiring) but it was a nice touch to sit and enjoy the food with us. At the end of the night, we ended up at another brewery where we got to sit on the steps to enjoy some beer like a true local. Samantha made sure we knew how to get back home - and even helped us book a ride share to get back to our hotel. Would highly recommend Lost Plate to anyone looking for a food tour!
