The Westman Islands, also known as Vestmannaeyjar, can only be characterized as natural marvels. Not long ago, the main island suffered a volcanic eruption which caused a portion of the town to be engulfed by lava. There’s no adequate way to articulate the magnitude of nature’s force when it collides with a small community like this, but the locals battled the volcano and achieved a partial victory, as they managed to save a section of the town and the port. We will stop at the Eldheimar Museum to gain inside knowledge from the residents about the catastrophic event. A day trip to this region is essential, as the sight of the rebuilt town and its surrounding landscape, post-volcano, is genuinely astounding. In summer, the island is an optimal location to observe puffins in close proximity, and the Beluga Whale Sanctuary offers another fantastic opportunity for wildlife encounters in Iceland.
