Additional Information

For many generations, the Sami and reindeer have inhabited this region, only recently opening their daily existence to visitors. You’ll have the opportunity to visit their settlement and interact with a horde of around 300 wild reindeer, some of whom will feed directly from your hand. Following this, you’ll be welcomed for warm beverages by a fire in a warmly lit gamme (an indigenous Sami shelter), where a casual three-course meal including a traditional Sami stew cooked over the fire, known as bidos, will be served.

After your meal, you will be ushered into a lavvu (Sami canvas dwelling) to sit around the fire and hear tales about Sami life and the experiences of a reindeer herder. The guide, a Sami by origin, will perform a joik, a customary Sami melody, for you. If conditions permit and the sky is unclouded, you might get to witness the remarkable northern lights above the reindeer settlement.

So many reindeer! - Awesome experience! The reindeer were so much fun to feed and we got to spend a lot of time doing it. The food was good and hearing about the Sami people was so interesting. Highly recommend this tour!

Fun and informative - I went on this tour solo and had a nice time. Feeding the reindeer was fun and made me feel like a kid again. I think that activity lasts too long, so I waited inside by the fire with a hot chocolate until dinner time. The dinner was tasty. The Sami reindeer herder’s story was probably my favorite part, it was really interesting to hear about that job and culture.

A great cultural experience!! - The guides provide an amazing explanation, the people are super kind and welcoming, they are open to questions and open to go into the details for your questions. The experience overall was great. I loved that if you are not prepared for the cold night, they can borrow some jackets. I am sorry for the noisy people who were interrupting the Sami guide during the story telling, The amazing cultural information that the Sami people shared was also something very valuable. I totally recommend it!

Loved it - Nice and kind program, nice people, must have if you love animals and culture. :) The reindeers are cute and a little stubborn, and also beautiful creatures.

Amazing family evening - This was an amazing experience with my 19 and 17 year old children and my wife. Very well organised, not overly touristy. A short, warm bus ride out of Tromso to the reindeer farm. There, we had so much fun feeding reindeer from buckets. Surrounded by majestic reindeer with big antlers, jockeying for position for their feed. Then into the traditional Sami Lavvvu, a large teepee type structure with a bonfire. Coffee, tea and biscuits. On to the delicious dinner, then the highlight of the evening was hearing Danil teach us about the Sami reindeer culture. Amazing, gentle, insightful, funny individual. Very poignant discussion of the culture being changed by technology, the Norwegian governments pressure to convert traditional lands to windfarms, and the challenges of traditional reindeer herding in the modern world. Beautiful evening.

Interesting evening - a mix of nature and culture - A nice way to see reindeers up close and to learn a bit about the Saami people and their culture - we especially enjoyed the joik (song). We were super lucky to see a little bit of aurora during the visit in the camp.

Sami - My daughter really liked the reindeer. I would have like to hear more Sami history. It was just average for me. Other tours that we went on were better than this one.

Reindeer feeding and Sámi evening - The most memorable and worth to experience was the Sami talking. It was interesting, funny, lots of facts and so friendly at once. We really enjoyed it. The feeding was nice to try but some of us were a bit uncomfortable between hungry pushy reindeers. The food wasnt bad but the time inbetweenn activities was too long and there was not enough space near the fireplace, all of us 4 were freezing and nobody bothered to change. It would be nice to be in a smaller group so everybody would be able to get warm.
