For hundreds of years, the reindeer and the Sami have coexisted in this region, and they’ve only recently started allowing visitors to witness their day-to-day activities. A visit to their camp offers you the opportunity to interact with a herd of approximately 300 wild reindeer, feeding them and having them eat directly from your hand. Additionally, you can enjoy a short, 15-20 minute sleigh ride led by the reindeer themselves.
Following these activities, you’re invited to join them for a hot drink by a cozy fire in a traditionally lit gamme (a specific type of Sami hut) where a leisurely three-course meal, featuring an open-fire cooked bidos (a traditional Sami stew), will be served.
Post dinner, you’re welcomed into a lavvu (a Sami tent) where you’ll gather around the fire to hear tales about the Sami culture and the life of a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will even perform a joik (a form of traditional Sami song) for your enjoyment. If the conditions are right and the sky is clear, you may have the opportunity to witness the northern lights above the reindeer camp.
