Our Lady of the Rocks - Our Lady of the Rocks is one of two islets located off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. This islet is man-made, formed by a bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and captured ships filled with stones. The largest structure on the islet is the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, which also includes a museum. Additionally, there is a small gift shop near the church and a navigation light at the islet’s western end. According to legend, the islet was created over centuries by local seamen who honored an ancient vow after discovering the icon of Madonna and Child on a rock in the sea on July 22, 1452. After each successful voyage, they would place a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The tradition of throwing rocks into the sea continues today. Every year at sunset on July 22, an event called fašinada in the local dialect occurs, where local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, expanding the island’s surface.

Perast - Perast is a historic town on the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, located a few kilometers northwest of Kotor. It is renowned for its proximity to the islets of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks. Archaeologists believe that the first settlements in the Perast area appeared during the Neolithic period. There are also monuments from the Illyrian, Roman, and early Christian eras. The city was established by the Illyrians and named after one of the local tribes, the Pirusti. The earliest records of Perast date back to 1336, when it was a small fishing village with a shipyard, and several commercial and fishing boats were always present in the harbor. However, due to the nearby strategically important island of St. George, which belonged to Kotor, Perast’s development was slow.
