The glacier is receding rapidly, having lost 22% of its area and 15.5% of its ice mass in the past three decades. Positioned on an Andean peak approximately 5250masl, the glacier possesses sheer, clifflike sides and heavily crevassed regions, indicative of a chirque glacier.
