An interesting and insightful tour - My wife and I enjoyed this trip immensely and I would like to give a lot of praise to our Askos Tour Guide - Mario - who made the whole experience a positive one. He was extremely knowledgeable and spoke clearly, ensuring that we learnt a lot about the history of the site and the importance and relevance of the structures. Make sure that you go to the correct location for the meeting point - we initially went to the entrance to the site, but the meeting point is actually a few minutes walk away at Basilica Paleocristiana dellAnnunziata, in Piazza Della Basilica. The site is about a 10 minute walk from Paestum train station, just cross the road when you exit the station and keep walking. There did not seem to be a lot else to do in Paestum, but it is worth spending some time in the museum to add some context to the ruins.

A great way to explore an Ancient Greek archeological site. - An excellent way to explore an amazing Ancient Greek town near Naples, Italy. The tour guide (I wish I remembered his name) was very knowledgeable, but he also made the learning experience enjoyable. He not only provided facts, but he gave background details of the site. Not only did we tour the main sites of Paestum, but we visited the museum that is right next to the main archeological site.

Fascinating tour at Paestum - It was a huge plus going on a small group tour at Paestum and we would highly recommend Aksos. Our professional tour guide was extremely well informed, not only about the objects in the adjacent museum and the temples themselves but also about the many layers of history of the site. His deep knowledge provided great context for what we were seeing. He was also very engaging and personable with a wonderful dry sense of humor. The museum is excellent. The three temples are incredibly well preserved and one is allowed to walk inside the largest one. The entire site is relatively small and very walkable.

A fantastic experience - Of all the tours we took during our recent two-week trip to Italy, the tour of Paestum with an archaeologist was by far the most impressive. Our archeologist/tour guide, Ivan Tornese, was outstanding, and I can’t recommend him enough. His English was excellent (much better than my Italian!), and the highlight was seeing how an archaeologist’s mind works. He explained the archaeological process in a way that helped us truly understand how we’ve come to know so much about the Paestum ruins today. Ivan also has first-hand experience, having participated in actual digs at Paestum—definitely ask him about the first temple of Hera! Taking a small group tour with a knowledgeable archaeologist was well worth the price. We’d happily book with Askos tours again and would love to have Ivan as our guide in the future.

Don't miss this tour - Our guide Mario was superb. He was knowledgeable, his English was fantastic and he brought Paestum to life. Beats the crowds at Pompeii.

Worth getting a tour - Other than being difficult to find the tour start location, the tour itself was very good and worth it based on the depth of information needed to understand the history there. All that is needed is a sign on the main road pointing to the meeting place

Mario was great - very knowledgeable and fun!! Really enjoyed the ruins totally worth the side trip to Paestum! - It was pouring rain— but the museum was as wonderful as the ruins and we waited the rain out there. Great examples of Greek friezes and pottery. I’ve been to Greece many times— but Mario was the first to explain the women on Greek pottery are portrayed with white paint - very detailed.

Last Minute Cancellation - Received a text 24 hours prior to our scheduled tour letting us know that they were cancelling, but we could upgrade to the private tour for a 'supplement'. After going back and forth via text, we settled on just getting a refund because we weren't going to pay $130 more per person (price difference on the website). When we requested the refund, we were told to go into our own reservation and cancel it because that would be 'easier' for us. Ridiculous. It should be noted that at the time we received the cancellation text you could still go online and book that exact tour on the website which was odd. I see based on other reviews that this is not the first time this tour has cancelled on people the day prior. They refuted the prior complaint stating that reviews should only be written for services rendered and a cancelled trip did not warrant a poor review. I think other travelers should be aware of the practice and short notice cancellations rightfully fall under the umbrella of expected service when booking a trip.

Poor organization - The review does not refer to the archaeologists who would have acted as guides but to the organization. Tour cancelled the day before after booking and paid well in advance. We had organized this tour in Paestum because we were in Naples for a long weekend. This last minute cancellation did not allow us to reorganize so the visit was skipped and we also missed the train tickets from Naples to Paestum that we had bought in advance. Poor organization
