- Mombacho Volcano - This magnificent and towering volcano’s cloud forest provides breathtaking panoramic views and is home to hundreds of orchids. Mombacho Volcano is an active andesitic and basaltic stratovolcano situated approximately 10 km south of the city of Granada, west of Lake Nicaragua, and a few kilometers southeast of Laguna Apoyo.
A possible historical eruption might have occurred in 1570, when a debris avalanche destroyed a village on the southern side of Mombacho Volcano. There are accounts of an explosion, but no conclusive evidence supports that an eruption took place.
Current activity includes fumaroles and hot springs within the two collapse scarps and on the upper northern flank.
Stratovolcano 1344 m – 4,409 ft / Nicaragua, 11.83°N – 85.97°W / Current status: normal or dormant.
- La Laguna de Apoyo - Regardless of the order chosen, the tour also allows time to relax at Apoyo Lagoon, a tranquil volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush greenery and crystal-clear waters. With a day pass, visitors can enjoy swimming, kayaking, and access to comfortable facilities, making it the ideal spot to unwind after exploring the volcanoes.
- Masaya Volcano National Park - Recognized as one of the most active in the world, Masaya Volcano, located 25 km southeast of Managua, is one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes.
Unlike most other volcanoes in subduction zones, it has primarily erupted fluid basaltic lava. During the time of the Spanish Conquistadors, it contained an active lava lake, and there are reports of attempts to extract the volcano’s molten “gold.”
Masaya is a complex featuring a 6×11.5 km large caldera with steep, up to 300 m high walls, and a group of young cones at the northwest end, including Nindirí and Masaya Volcano itself. There are several summit craters, including the currently active Santiago crater, which is the site of ongoing activity.
Caldera 635 m – 2,083 ft / Nicaragua, 11.98°N – 86.16°W / Current status: erupting.
