Puente de San Pablo (Saint Paul Bridge) - The breathtaking beauty surrounding it has long attracted both Cuenca’s residents and visitors to cross the bridge and capture its stunning views in photographs.
-
Casas Colgadas - Nestled on the rock’s edge above the Hoz del Huécar, the Casas Colgadas are a quintessential symbol of Cuenca and exquisite examples of Gothic architecture. Constructed with masonry and ashlars at the corners, supported by corbels, they offer a dramatic view over the river from their wooden balconies.
-
Museo de Arte Abstracto Espanol - A legendary museum in a legendary location. The Hanging Houses serve as the permanent home for the collection; a welcoming and awe-inspiring space with open-air wooden balconies, offering unparalleled vistas over the Huécar river gorges.
-
Plaza Mayor de Cuenca - Cuenca’s historic center is centered around its Plaza Mayor. Its irregular boundaries are adorned with beauty, tradition, and culture. The vibrant facades and monumental architecture of its iconic buildings make it a focal point of light and color.
The Convent of Las Petras is a grand 16th-century structure spanning three blocks. The striking façade of the Norman neo-Gothic style Cathedral vies for attention with the Baroque town hall, which stands on three semicircular arches. The square is, ultimately, the origin of the cultural and aesthetic flow that permeates the entire city.
-
Catedral De Cuenca - The Cathedral, the first structure erected post-reconquest, showcases the full grandeur of ecclesiastical authority. Initiated in the late 12th century, its construction underwent several phases, renovations, expansions, and stylistic variations, predominantly Norman Gothic, with Romanesque influences and later additions like Plateresque, Cistercian, or Baroque.
-
Arco de Bezudo - Few remnants remain of the once-impenetrable Christian fortress, including some wall fragments near the entrance, a tower, two impressive square bastions, and a beautiful semicircular arch known as the Arco de Bezudo.
This 16th-century arch, featuring a shield with a fleece, is one of Cuenca’s ancient city gates, dividing the intramural and extramural areas. It marks the narrowest point between the two gorges, from which the city was defended from its highest vantage. Today, visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the arch and enjoy spectacular views.
- Torre Mangana - Built on the ruins of the old fortress, Mangana Tower remained structurally unchanged until the 20th century, when it was restored due to deterioration, adopting a neo-Mudejar style and an appearance reminiscent of Italian towers. Initially likely serving as a defense and watchtower, it later became a bell tower and the city’s reference clock.
