A MUST SEE IN LONDON - My wife and I visited the Tower of London during a recent trip to England. This was my second visit and the tour and exhibits have changed quite a bit since my last visit. It is highly recommended that you purchase your tickets in advance to avoid the lines. (You can purchase tickets online or via most hotel concierge staff.) The tours impart a lot of history and the way they currently have the crown jewels displayed make it much easier to view them than in years past. Due to traffic in London, it is recommended that you show up early to make sure you are on time for your tour entry. (The nearby St. John's Chapel is an interesting sight to catch if you have time to kill before your Tower tour.) We highly recommend you visit this sight when visiting London.

So much history! - The Tower is an entire fortress dating back to medieval times. Of course it is probably best known as a prison and site of executions, especially for two of Henry VIII’s wives. The execution site is marked, but other than that, not much is said about Anne Boleyn or Catherine Howard. There is an extensive collection of armor and weapons from the Middle Ages, displays about dungeons and torture, information on the animal menagerie, and the ravens. The display of the Crown Jewels is incredible, but is the one place photography is not allowed. Yeoman Guards (Beefeaters) patrol the grounds and will interact with visitors with information about the Tower.

All this and Jewels too - We had a great time at the Tower. Some of my ancestors, not so much. Crown Jewels, commemorative poppies, and tons of history. Photos are not allowed in the Jewell rooms, but they are happy to sell you photos. All the things you know from movies and TV. And a fine view of the Tower Bridge when you depart.

An amazing Yeoman Warder...and of course: The Tower! - I have visited the Tower at least 10 times (including a Ceremony of the Keys), but this was my friend's first ever visit. I hoped that it would be a good one, but...it was an absolutely great one! We were at the first Yeoman Warder's Tour on Monday, May 19th. As the crowd grew in the moat area where the tour begins now, it appeared that there were almost 175 people waiting for the tour! I seriously was ready to bail and wait for another (less crowded) time, but the Yeoman began by "weeding out the crowd" by mentioning the currently short lines at the Crown Jewels which caused about 50 people to leave. Still, that left a huge crowd... We stuck with it and it was awesome! His voice carried well, he captured the crowd with a blend of bluster and humor, and he kept up a brisk pace throughout the 45 minute tour. (I wish I had written his name down, but his photo appears in this review). Besides the rest of the Tower that we viewed (including the Crown Jewels and the Armory), the Yeoman Warder tour was the most memorable take away from that wonderful Monday morning in May!

Beefeater - Yeoman Warden Scott Kelley was an amazing guide. His handsome presence spoke volumes. Murder and torcher is the business and hand. Braveheart sucks! Thank you for a job well done!

Educational & Entertaining! - Our guide, Scott Kelly #beefy409, made the tour interesting, fun, interactive & meaningful. We toured in the afternoon at 3:00 & we were able to see the Crown Jewels at the end of the tour without long lines or heavy crowds. Huzzah!

RETURN VISIT TO SEE THE POPPIES - This was my husband's first visit to the tower and my second, but even I found plenty of things to explore that I'd missed the first time when I had done a fully guided tour. We managed to arrive right when a yeoman's talk & walk was beginning, and this gave excellent background information to the history of the buildings you walk amongst and explore. We went on a Saturday afternoon and found it to be quite crowded especially the Crown Jewels exhibit but this could have also been because of the ceramic poppy display that was cascading around the White Tower and the gardens. The 30,000 poppies were placed there to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day and is definitely a stunning sight to help you reflect upon the losses of war.
