The Call of the Volcanoes

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the allure of the Bisoke Hike in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park was irresistible. The thought of trekking up a volcano, surrounded by the lush landscapes that Africa is renowned for, was enough to set my heart racing. I arrived in Kinigi, the gateway to the park, with my camera ready and my spirit eager for the challenge ahead.

The day began with a briefing at the park’s reception, where I sipped on a steaming cup of Rwandan coffee. The air was filled with anticipation as fellow hikers and I listened intently to the guides. We were reminded to bring snacks for energy and to prepare for a late lunch after our descent. The journey to the Bisoke head trail was an adventure in itself, a bumpy ride over volcanic rocks that only heightened the sense of excitement.

Ascending the Giant

Standing at 2700 meters above sea level, the Bisoke head trail marked the beginning of our ascent. The path was steep and challenging, but every step was a testament to the raw beauty of the Rwandan landscape. The trail wound through dense vegetation, with giant heather and other unique flora lining the slopes. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler, and the views more breathtaking.

The possibility of encountering gorillas or the elusive Golden Monkey troop added an element of thrill to the hike. Though photography was prohibited without a permit, the mere sight of these magnificent creatures was enough to etch the memory in my mind forever. The guides, knowledgeable and passionate, shared stories of the park’s wildlife and conservation efforts, reminding us of the importance of preserving these natural wonders.

A Summit to Remember

After four hours of climbing, the summit of Mount Bisoke greeted us with a sight that was worth every ounce of effort. The Crater Lake, surrounded by drier vegetation, was a serene oasis amidst the rugged terrain. From this vantage point, the panoramic views of the other five volcanoes and the Twin Lakes were nothing short of spectacular.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch at the summit, savoring the moment and the sense of accomplishment. The descent, though quicker, was no less thrilling, as we retraced our steps through the enchanting landscape. As the day drew to a close, we were treated to a late lunch at a local restaurant, a perfect end to an unforgettable adventure.
