Highlights
  • Vatican Museums - The Vatican History Museum is just one part of the impressive Vatican Museums. Founded by Pope Paul in 1973, the collection of the Historical Museum was originally located under a square garden. It was not until 1987 that it was moved to the main floor of the Lateran Apostolic Palace and reopened to the public in March 1991. The Vatican City Museums began their activities in 1503 by the then Pope Julius.

The museum’s selection of works grew from private to public collections of rich families, former popes and the future pope. The Vatican Museums grew when the wide variety of collections required more buildings to house the works and this led to the Vatican Museum of History.

  • Sistine Chapel - When visiting the Sistine Chapel, what catches people’s attention is not its architecture, but the frescoes that completely cover the walls and ceiling.

The Sistine Chapel is the pope’s own chapel, the site of the pope’s most important ceremonies and is used by the Holy College of Cardinals to elect a new pope when a seat becomes vacant. But when the chapel is not in use for practical reasons, tourists from all over the world flock to the chapel, all eager to catch a glimpse of the magnificent paintings hidden inside.

  • St. Peter’s Basilica - Peter’s Church is a must-see for its storied history and grandeur. It is located in the heart of the Vatican and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. There are many reasons to visit this architectural marvel, one of which is that it is the final resting place of the Apostle Peter. it is the holiest church in the world and contains many important relics of Christian history.

Additional Information

Vatican City, one of the holiest sites in Christianity, is a monument to a spiritual endeavour as well as a history spanning over two millennia. The Vatican is inextricably linked to the history of Christianity as the location of the burial of the Apostle Saint Peter, the first in an uninterrupted line of Roman Pontiffs, and a major hub for pilgrimages. It is also a prime example of Baroque and Renaissance art, as well as an ideal work of art. It began to have a lasting impact on the advancement of the arts in the sixteenth century.

The Lateran Treaty on February 11, 1929, which established the independent State, grants it territorial power over 44 hectares in the heart of Rome.

Avoid, avoid, avoid - So disappointed with this tour. On the day the guide sent us different meeting instructions than originally and we went to the new location as instructed. They advised they had no record of our booking and it was in fact a provider down the street and around the corner (the original address on the booking). So off we went and lo and behold, the provider was not open. We tried calling and he repeated again to go to the new address so off we went back to the new address we had already been to. Without any explanation the same lady who originally told us she didn’t have our booking said she did have it after all and the provider had given it to her now. We can only assume that this provider has on sold our tour to another company which resulted in the confusion and change of address and company. This tour was false advertising as the Basilica wasn’t even OPEN at the time of our tour so there was no way it could be visited. People save their entire lives and travel around the world for these opportunities and this provider has taken advantage of that. We were so disappointed we couldn’t see what we came for AND PAID FOR. Although the guide we had was clearly knowledgeable, we simply couldn’t understand the majority of what she said due to her thick accent. This provider should really at the very least need to partially refund for false advertising. I do not recommend this company and wouldn’t use again.
