The Sistine Chapel was built in the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by the chapel’s namesake, Pope Sixtus. Michelangelo commissioned Pope Julius to paint the ceiling, and other artists were involved, such as Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio (Michelangelo’s teacher). The Sistine Chapel was intended to illustrate the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, so the ceiling is decorated with nine passages from the book of Genesis. - St. Peter’s Basilica - The history of the church of Saint Peter begins in the 4th century, when Emperor Constantine decided to build a basilica where the apostle was buried. In 329, the construction of the basilica was completed.
The church was used for religious celebrations, as a covered cemetery and as a funeral hall. In the High Middle Ages, it was the most important place of pilgrimage in the West. Archaeological excavations, descriptions, drawings and ancient paintings under the current basilica give us an idea of what the first basilica of the Vatican was like.
