• Shepperd’s Dell Falls - Shepperd’s Dell Falls is a quick and worthwhile stop. A short tenth-of-a-mile walk next to a beautiful old bridge from 1914 leads to this double-decker waterfall.

• Bridal Veil Falls State Park - Bridal Veil Falls is a favorite among a strong selection of waterfalls. This powerful, two-tiered cascade drops 120 feet over mossy rocks. Viewing it requires a moderate 2/3-mile hike.

• Angels Rest - Approaching next is Angel’s Rest, a classic Oregon hike. It’s a challenging climb of 1,500 feet over 2.4 miles to a stunning bluff overlook, offering views of Beacon Rock, Silver Star Mountain, and Portland.

• Wahkeena Falls - Approaching the showstoppers of the Columbia River Gorge, Wahkeena Falls is first. It’s an impressive waterfall, tumbling 242 feet through a narrow gorge.

• Horsetail Falls - The Horsetail Falls Trail is accessible from this direction, offering a nice five-waterfall loop. A 1-mile round trip hike leads directly to Ponytail Falls.

• Bonneville Dam - The first federal dam project on the Columbia River, built in 1938 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The Bradford Island Visitor Center, located in a historic building on an island in the river, features exhibits on local history and an observation deck with excellent views of the gorge.

• Cascade Locks - A fun suggested quick side trip is the little town of Cascade Locks, which offers a few attractions worth exploring.

• Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail - The Bridge of the Gods is not only a historic bridge but also part of the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,650-mile long-distance path from Mexico to Canada.

• Starvation Creek State Park - This moderate, short trail is dotted with cascades. In about a mile, four waterfalls can be seen, starting with a tenth-of-a-mile walk east to view Starvation Creek Falls.

• Hood River - Downtown Hood River is perfect for exploring its boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, wineries, and breweries. The History Museum of Hood River County offers exhibits on human history from Indigenous cultures to settlers, loggers, and Japanese Americans, making it a great activity, especially in poor weather.

• Full Sail Brewing Company - In Hood River, a visit to Full Sail Brewing might be enjoyable. This brewery, one of Oregon’s first microbreweries, opened in a former fruit canning factory in 1987.

• Cloud Cap Inn - Constructed at about 6,000 feet on the mountain’s northeastern side, Cloud Cap Inn was the first permanent resort on Mt. Hood, opening in 1889. It featured handsome stone-and-timber construction, fine dining, accommodations for 30 guests, and eventually, even flush toilets!

• Elk Meadows - Starting from the Elk Meadows trailhead, take the Elk Meadows Trail to connect to Newton Creek Trail and a section of the famous Timberline Trail.

• Devils Kitchen - The Devils Kitchen is located beneath the popular routes that mountaineers use when climbing Mt. Hood, so anyone who slips and falls along those trails could end up in a fumarole.
