• Christian Point Trail - Approaching soon is Christian Point Trail. For those seeking a quieter experience away from the crowds, this trail is a great choice, as it’s less popular in the park. It presents a slightly greater challenge than some other trails, yet remains moderately difficult. The entire trail is four miles round trip, leading to another expansive view of the shoreline accessible from Snake Bight Trail.

• Mahogany Hammock Road - Just ahead is a quick detour to the Mahogany Hammock Trail. This boardwalk trail meanders a half-mile through a dense jungle of hardwood trees, taking about 10 minutes to complete. Beyond the lush greenery, the trail also boasts the largest living mahogany tree in the United States!

• Everglades Outpost - Approaching soon is the Everglades Outpost, a wildlife rescue where visitors can encounter over 200 exotic animals. In 1991, Bob and Barbara Freer dedicated themselves to rescuing and rehabilitating animals that would otherwise face euthanasia. They began with small birds and raccoons, eventually expanding to camels, lemurs, big cats, and more! Many of these animals were previously kept as illegal exotic pets before being cared for by the Freers, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitats.

• Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center - In the early 1900s, large portions of the Everglades were drained, filled, and converted into agricultural or residential land. Unchecked hunting of local wildlife was rampant. It seemed inevitable that the entire wetland would be eradicated.

• 33034 - Approaching is West Lake Trail. This half-mile boardwalk leads to West Lake, offering clear views across the water. It takes about 10 minutes to walk and is an excellent stop for those hoping to spot some of the park’s marine wildlife. Although the water isn’t particularly clear, look for the telltale ripples of an alligator or crocodile swimming across the lake! If you were a deer, could you spot it approaching in time to escape?

• Main Park Road - Earnest F. Coe is often referred to as the Father of the Everglades, but he didn’t create this park alone. He received significant help, especially from Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Douglas, a columnist for the Miami Herald, was renowned for her passionate advocacy for women’s rights, racial justice, and conservation. She joined Coe’s efforts in the 1920s, using her writing skills to defend the Everglades. She penned columns to capture public interest and wrote letters to Congress to support her cause.

• Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower - Approaching soon is Pa-Hay-Okee Lookout Tower. Accessible via a short boardwalk, this observation platform offers visitors panoramic views of the “river of grass” that characterizes much of the Everglades. It’s a quick, 5-minute detour, and well worth a visit.

• Gumbo Limbo Trail - Up next is a brief detour to the Gumbo Limbo Trail. Gumbo Limbo is only a half-mile long. It’s paved, shaded, and winds through a dense grove of hardwood trees and lush ferns. It is easy and can be completed in about 15 minutes.

• Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail - Ahead is Nine Mile Pond Trail. One key feature sets this trail apart from others: It’s not on land! This is a canoe trail. Visitors with boats can paddle the 5-mile loop through shallow, grassy marsh, experiencing the natural scenery up close. Water levels are generally high enough in the fall and winter, though conditions can vary during a drought.
