- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Giza[a] stands as the largest Egyptian pyramid, serving as the tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, who reigned during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. Constructed around 2600 BC,[3] over approximately 26 years,[4] it is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one that remains largely intact. It is the most renowned monument of the Giza pyramid complex, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Memphis and its Necropolis”.[5] It is located at the northeastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - The pyramid of Khafre, also known as Chephren, is the middle of the three Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza, ranking as the second tallest and second largest. It is the only pyramid among the three that still retains cladding at the top. It serves as the tomb of the Fourth-Dynasty Pharaoh Khafre (Chefren), who ruled around 2558−2532 BC. Similar to the Great Pyramid, a rock outcropping was utilized in the core. Due to the plateau’s slope, the northwest corner was cut 10 m (33 ft) out of the rock subsoil, and the southeast corner was built up.
- Menkaure Pyramid - The pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three main pyramids of the Giza pyramid complex, situated on the Giza Plateau in the southwestern outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. It is believed to have been constructed as the tomb of the Fourth Dynasty King Menkaure.
Size and construction
A diagram of the pyramid.
Menkaure’s pyramid originally stood at a height of 65.5 meters (215 ft), making it the smallest of the three major pyramids at the Giza Necropolis. It now stands at 61 m (200 ft) tall with a base of 108.5 m (356 ft). Its angle of incline is approximately 51°20′25″. It was built using limestone and Aswan granite. The upper portion was traditionally cased with Tura limestone. The construction of the outer casing of the pyramid was halted at sixteen to eighteen layers of granite following Menkaure’s death, with only seven remaining today due to vandalism and erosion.[2][3] Part of the granite was left in a rough state.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue depicting a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a human head and a lion’s body.[1] Facing east, it is located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The original form of the Sphinx was carved from the bedrock of the Eocene-aged Mokattam Formation,[2] and has since been restored with layers of limestone blocks.[3] It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches.[4] The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognizable statues worldwide. The face of the Sphinx remains a topic of scholarly debate; it appears to represent Pharaoh Khufu or one of his sons, Pharaohs Djedefre and Khafre.[5] Archaeological evidence suggests it was created by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Khufu (c. 2590–2566 BC)[6] or Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC).
- National Museum of Egyptian Civilization NEMC - The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is a prominent museum located in Old Cairo, a district of Cairo, Egypt.
Partially opened in 2017, the museum was officially inaugurated on 3 April 2021, with the relocation of 22 mummies, including 18 kings and four queens, from the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo, in an event known as the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade.[1] The museum showcases a collection of 50,000 artifacts, illustrating Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the modern era. The permanent collection is divided into two distinct sections; one chronological and the other thematic. The chronological sections include: Archaic, Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Medieval, Islamic, modern, and contemporary. The thematic sections include: Dawn of Civilization, The Nile, Writing, State and Society, Material Culture, Beliefs and Thinking, and the Gallery of Royal Mummies. UNESCO provided technical assistance to the museum.
