Highlights
- Funchal - After stopping for an early morning coffee and pit stop we head up into the mountains via the “interesting” back roads of Funchal in our 4x4 towards the third highest peak of Madeira, Pico do Areiro
- Pico do Arieiro - Very often we are above the clouds and the colours are absolutely extraordinary, truly a once in a lifetime moment!
- Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio - After coming down from the sunrise we go on a special “bonus” levada walk which we will get all to ourselves, usually very crowded and popular tourist route.
- Ribeiro Frio - We end off with a local style breakfast coffee/sandwich/poncha at one of Madeira´s best local snack bars

There is a certain feeling about being up before everybody else, experiencing the marvels of nature uninterrupted and in all its glory
Our number 1 sunrise spot is Pico do Areiro, the third highest peak of the island.
Very often we are above the clouds and the colours are absolutely extraordinary, truly a once in a lifetime moment!
Of course we cannot always guarantee the perfect weather conditions for the perfect sunrise so we have back up spots such as;
Pico do facho, Ponta Sao Lourenço, Guindaste Viewpoint and one or two secret spots, each with their own unique characteristics.
Our guides are specialists at itinerary planning and when the weather is not ideal, we initiate our “plan B”. Note that this could be a completely different itinerary than that is shown here, in order to make the most of the morning!
This is a real adventure and an experience you will not easily forget!

Sunrise Tour with Fernando - Awesome experience with Fernando. We met up with him in Funchal and he took us up to the peak. Got us to the perfect spot at the right time. It can be a bit chaotic if it's your first time, so having Fernando guide us really helped. We did a quick levada walk and got some local breakfast. But in addition to that, Fernando taught us a lot about Madeira, bananas, and is really fun.

Amazing experience, peaceful sunrise and beautiful forest walk - We had an amazing time on this trip. It was one of the highlights of our week in Madeira. Our guide Nuno, was fun and chatty cheering everyone up after the early start and introducing everyone. We are a family of 3 and we were joined by a couple from London. He got us to a great spot to watch the sunrise. Truly beautiful. We also really enjoyed the walk to Balcoes, another stunning spot. Our morning was relaxed and we weren't rushed at any point, free to wander and enjoy at our own pace. We loved the Pastel de Natas at the coffee stop near Balcoes.
Nuno was friendly and informative throughout telling us the history of the island, and his personal stories of life in Funchal made the morning more fun for my 11 yr old daughter, keeping her laughing. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Nuno & Hit the Road.

Brilliant trip! - This was an absolutely brilliant trip. Our guide Fernando was great, really knowledgeable and friendly. I would really recommend this trip to anyone coming to Madeira. Fabulous!

Perfect start to the morning on my husband’s birthday! - Incredible experience!!! Our guide Fernando was punctual and very friendly. The vehicle was very comfortable. We learned a lot from our guide about this beautiful island throughout the tour! The sunrise above the clouds was absolutely amazing; Fernando personally walked us to a perfect spot on the mountain to watch! Afterwards we enjoyed a beautiful and peaceful levada walk ending in a fantastic view. Finishing the tour was delicious coffee, breakfast sandwiches and of course a poncha! HIGHLY recommend!! This is a must do on the island !

Amazing trip with Fernando! - Our guide Fernando was the best. The weather is persnickety up there with fog and cloud cover for the sunrise tours. But Fernando checked it out, pivoted, and found us an even BETTER, secluded spot to watch the sunrise. Then took us on a lovely adventure and was so wonderfully knowledgeable about the foliage and levadas in Madeira. He was genuine and proud of this wonderful place and it emanated from him. The whole trip was a joy and a perfect way to close out our Portugal tour.

Didn't want the trip to end! HIghly recommend. - Enjoyed every minute, didn't want the trip to end! Our driver Fernando was a real gem! Easy going, informative and fun. Led us to a perfect spot to see the sunrise in plenty of time of time to see the amazing array of colours before sunrise. Spent some time at the top enjoying the spectacular views! Lovely drive to the start of our short levada walk Walk was easy without any scary drops, leading to the most amazing viewpoint! Spent some time taking in the beauty before heading down to a local mountain cafe for coffee where I could have stayed all day! Highly rrcommend!

WOW views - Absolutely amazing! Booked the sunrise tour and so happy I did. It was one of the most stunning things I’ve seen in my life. Our guide Fernando was also fantastic. Super kind, accommodating, informative and funny. Would most definitely book again!

The sun didnt shine but Fernando did !! - Fernando was there ready and waiting for us at 5am. He is so knowledgeable and very interesting with all his facts on Madeira. We got up to the mountains in plenty of time but unfortunately it was a very cold wait in the clouds for a non spectacular sunrise however it did come above the clouds eventually. The views up there are well worth getting cold for and Fernando made it a very fun trip and even recommended the best thing to eat in the restaurant after the levada walk. Thank You xx
