A Culinary Adventure Begins

Istanbul, a city that never sleeps, is a place where the past and present collide in a vibrant tapestry of culture, history, and, most importantly, food. As a former city planner turned travel writer, I have a penchant for urban landscapes and hidden gems, and Istanbul’s Fatih district promised to deliver just that. The allure of the Turkish Food Night was irresistible, and I found myself eagerly anticipating the culinary journey that awaited.

The evening began at the bustling Sirkeci Tram Station, where I met my fellow food adventurers. Our guides, Şule and Mutlu, were a dynamic duo, brimming with enthusiasm and knowledge. We kicked off the tour with a taste of cig kofte, a spicy, raw meatball dish served in a crisp iceberg lettuce leaf with a squeeze of lemon. The flavors exploded in my mouth, setting the tone for the evening. As we strolled through the streets, the aroma of tahini Turkish Delight wafted through the air, and I couldn’t resist sampling this sweet, nutty treat.

Rooftop Revelations

Our next stop was a rooftop restaurant in Süleymaniye, offering a breathtaking view of Istanbul’s skyline. As a lover of urban landscapes, I was in my element. The city stretched out before us, a sea of twinkling lights and historic minarets. We sipped on traditional Turkish tea and coffee, the warmth of the drinks a perfect contrast to the cool evening breeze. The final leg of our journey took us to Kadinlar Pazari, where we dined at Siirt Şeref Buryan 1892, a historic family restaurant. The sheer variety of dishes was staggering, each one a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Turkey. We began with a mezze platter, featuring ezme, salatasi, and cacik, each dish bursting with flavor. The main courses were a spectacle in themselves, with dishes like perde pilavi and adana kebabi stealing the show.

The sweet, honeyed flavors were the perfect ending to a meal that had been a feast for the senses. As we savored the last bites, Şule and Mutlu regaled us with tales of Istanbul’s culinary traditions, their passion for food evident in every word.

As the evening drew to a close, I felt a sense of fulfillment, not just from the delicious food but from the connections made and the stories shared.
