Island-Hopping Adventures: A Day in the British Virgin Islands
When the call of the ocean beckons, there’s no resisting the allure of a day spent island-hopping in the British Virgin Islands. With the promise of adventure and relaxation, I set sail on the Pirates Penny, eager to explore the hidden gems of Jost Van Dyke and beyond.
Setting Sail to Jost Van Dyke
The sun had barely risen when I found myself boarding the Pirates Penny, a sleek vessel moored at Red Hook. With a small group of eight, we were ready to embark on a day of exploration and adventure in the British Virgin Islands. Our guides for the day, Captain Cornelius and First Mate Maeve, greeted us with warm smiles and a promise of a day filled with unforgettable experiences.
As we set sail, the gentle Caribbean breeze and the rhythmic sound of the waves set the perfect tone for the day. Our first destination was Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke, a quaint town that seemed to be waking up just as we arrived. The legendary Foxy’s Bar was our first stop, and while some of us were lucky enough to meet Foxy himself, others wandered the sleepy streets, soaking in the island’s charm.
Discovering Hidden Gems
While some of our group opted for an early swim at the Soggy Dollar Bar, I chose to follow Maeve on a hike to the Bubbly Pool. The path was a mix of dusty trails and rocky terrain, with Maeve pointing out interesting flora along the way, including a small cactus flower that was surprisingly edible. Though the tide was low, and the waves entering the pool were gentle, the experience was nothing short of magical. Maeve captured the moment with a photo, a perfect memento of our adventure.
Back on the boat, we sailed around Jost Van Dyke, with Maeve and Captain Cornelius sharing fascinating insights about the islands. From the history of Jeffrey Epstein’s private island to the vibrant marine life, their knowledge added depth to our journey. As we anchored at White Bay, the allure of the Soggy Dollar Bar was irresistible. A refreshing Painkiller in hand, I savored the moment, surrounded by the warm Caribbean waters and the laughter of fellow travelers.
Thrills at Willy T’s
Our final stop was the infamous Willy T’s, a floating bar that promised thrills and excitement. The highlight was undoubtedly the exhilarating jump off the deck into the crystal-clear waters below. As someone who thrives on adventure, this was the perfect way to cap off an incredible day.
The journey back to Red Hook was a time for reflection, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Captain Cornelius and Maeve had orchestrated a seamless day of exploration, adventure, and relaxation. Their camaraderie and expertise made the experience truly exceptional, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a stunning part of the world.
For those seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation, the Jost Van Dyke Funday & Willy T is a must. Whether you’re diving into the vibrant waters or sipping a cocktail at a legendary bar, this journey promises memories that will last a lifetime.
