Journey to the Clouds

The anticipation was palpable as I embarked on my journey to the Fortified Citadel of Kuelap, nestled high in the Andes of Chachapoyas. The allure of the Chachapoyas Cloud Warriors and their enigmatic history had long captivated my imagination. As a biologist and environmental advocate, the opportunity to explore such a unique blend of culture and nature was irresistible.

The day began with a scenic drive through the lush landscapes of the Utcubamba Valley. Our guide, a local expert with a deep passion for the region’s history, shared stories of the Chachapoyas people, known for their fierce resistance and architectural prowess. The Macro Archaeological site, with its towering structures, offered a tantalizing glimpse into the past, setting the stage for the wonders that awaited us at Kuelap.

Arriving at Nuevo Tingo, we boarded the cable car that would carry us up the mountainside. The ride was a breathtaking ascent through the clouds, offering panoramic views of the verdant valleys below. It was a moment of pure connection with the natural world, a reminder of the delicate balance we must strive to protect.

The Fortress of Kuelap
