Chasing Waterfalls: A Journey to Gocta’s Majestic Heights
Drawn by the allure of one of the world’s highest waterfalls, I embarked on a journey to Gocta Waterfalls in Chachapoyas. The promise of a 12-kilometer trek through the cloud forest was irresistible, offering a chance to connect with nature in its purest form.
Into the Heart of the Cloud Forest
The journey to Gocta Waterfalls began in the quaint village of Cocachimba, a place that seemed to exist in a world untouched by time. As I signed in at the small office and paid the park fee, I felt a familiar thrill of anticipation. The trail ahead promised a 12-kilometer trek through the cloud forest, a realm where nature reigns supreme. The path was well-marked, guiding me through a landscape that seemed to pulse with life. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the calls of unseen creatures, a symphony of the wild that resonated with my soul.
The hike was a test of endurance, a series of ascents and descents that challenged my legs and lungs. Yet, every step was a revelation. The forest unfolded like a living tapestry, each turn revealing new wonders. Towering trees draped in moss, vibrant orchids clinging to branches, and the occasional flash of color as a toucan or Andean cock-of-the-rock flitted by. It was a reminder of the delicate balance of life in these ecosystems, a balance that I have dedicated my life to understanding and preserving.
The Majestic Gocta
After hours of trekking, the sound of rushing water grew louder, a crescendo that heralded the approach of Gocta Waterfall. Emerging from the forest, I was greeted by the sight of the falls, a 2,531-foot double-drop cascade that plunged into a pool of inky water. The sheer power and beauty of the waterfall were overwhelming, a testament to the raw, untamed force of nature.
Standing at the base of the falls, I felt the cool mist on my skin, a refreshing balm after the long hike. The temptation to take a dip in the icy pool was irresistible, despite knowing the water would be frigid. As I submerged myself, the cold was a shock, a jolt that took my breath away. Yet, it was exhilarating, a moment of pure connection with the natural world. Emerging from the water, I felt invigorated, my senses heightened by the experience.
A Journey to Remember
The return journey offered its own rewards. Along the way, I stopped at a small home selling coconut water, a sweet and refreshing treat that provided a welcome respite. I also noticed horses available for rent, led by a woman whose age belied her strength and endurance. Her presence was a reminder of the resilience of the people who call this region home.
As I made my way back to Cocachimba, I paused at Gocta Lodge for a meal and a cold Amazonas beer. Sitting there, gazing at the waterfall from afar, I reflected on the day’s adventure. The trek to Gocta was more than just a hike; it was a journey into the heart of a vibrant ecosystem, a chance to witness the beauty and power of nature firsthand. It was a reminder of why I am so passionate about conservation, and why I continue to advocate for the protection of these precious landscapes.
