Chefchaouen to Volubilis to Meknes
Chefchaouen Medina - Spend the morning exploring the blue city of Chefchaouen, nestled in the Rif Mountains of north-west Morocco. Known for its faded blue buildings, the city features leather and weaving workshops along its steep cobbled streets. Visit the shaded central square of Outa el Hammam, home to the 15th-century kasbah with ethnographic and artistic exhibits. The Great Mosque’s octagonal minaret is nearby.
Volubilis - After lunch, travel to Volubilis through the Rif Mountains, passing Wazan and other villages. Discover the Roman ruins and learn about Morocco’s archaeological history. After visiting the ruins, head to Meknes for an overnight stay at a hotel.
Meknes to Fes
Meknes - Enjoy free time to explore Meknes, including the historical medina walls, Bab el Mansour, and Moulay Ismail’s shrine, among other sites.
Fes - After lunch, travel from Meknes to Fes, a journey of about an hour and a half. Upon arrival, check into your hotel, then explore the city’s stunning views and attractions. Overnight stay at a hotel in Fes. Fes is a city to get lost in. Before entering the medina, visit the Merenid Tombs north of the city for a panoramic view of historic Fes and its surroundings. You might spot leather hides drying on sun-warmed rocks. Enter Fes el Bali through Bab Boujeloud gate to find a café for a late lunch. Continue exploring Fes at your leisure before returning to your traditional riad for dinner and a restful evening.
Fes City Tour
Fes - After breakfast at your Riad, begin exploring Morocco’s oldest city by walking through its alleys and narrow streets. The tour starts with the Royal Palace gate, the Jewish quarter, and the first Mellah built in Morocco during the 14th century. Visit cultural and historical sites, including the renowned Al Qaraouine University, the world’s oldest, the Tanneries, and Moulay Idriss mausoleum. After lunch, visit the tiles cooperative and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Medina of Fes. Overnight at the same Riad.
Fes to Ifrane to Midelt to Sahara Desert of Merzouga
Ifrane - After breakfast, depart Fes for Merzouga via Midelt and the Ziz Valley. Travel through Ifrane, a picturesque mountain village known as the Switzerland of Morocco. Stop at the cedar forest in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Experience glimpses of the Middle and Higher Atlas mountains, stopping at Azrou, a Berber village in the famous cedar forest, Morocco’s largest, where you may see Barbary apes.
Midelt - Continue to Midelt, passing through the stunning hills and mountains of the Atlas. After lunch in Midelt, travel through the Tiz Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, admiring views of the High Atlas plateau and the changing scenery as you approach Errachidia city in the southeast.
Merzouga - Travel along the Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views en route to Erfoud and Rissani. Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon and enjoy a welcome glass of mint tea. Take a camel ride in the Sahara Desert dunes of Merzouga to reach the camp for an overnight stay.
Merzouga to Todra Gorges to Dades Valley
Merzouga Desert - Rise early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Afterward, return to the camp for breakfast. Enjoy a peaceful camel trek back to Merzouga village, appreciating the unique beauty of the Erg Chebbi dunes as they change with the light.
Todra Gorges - Upon reaching Merzouga village, meet the driver to continue to Dades. Optionally stop in Rissani to visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, founder of the Alaouite dynasty, then proceed to Erfoud to visit the fossilized marble factory before heading to the Todra Valley for lunch. In Todra, take a half-hour walk to explore the gorges and be guided through the palm grove and Jewish quarter. Todra Gorges is Morocco’s highest and narrowest gorge, a climber’s paradise and a unique location.
Boumalne Dades - In the evening, drive through the Dades Valley, where you’ll see majestic sand castles and the “monkey toes” rock formations. Overnight accommodation will be in a charming guest house overlooking the Dades Valley.
Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, and Aït Benhaddou Kasbah
Ouarzazate - Travel along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Aït Benhaddou, Morocco’s most famous kasbah. Pass through the Dades Valley and stop in Kela’a M’gouna to admire the rose bushes. Visit a rose collective to see the process of converting rose petals into rose water and oil. As you continue west, consider stopping in Ouarzazate, North Africa’s movie capital, to learn how its regions have been featured in films like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. Join a movie studio tour and visit the Musée du Cinema to learn about filmmaking and the area’s history.
Ait Ben Haddou - Spend the afternoon exploring Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old ksour dates back to the 11th century when it was a key location on the trans-Saharan trade route. Kasbah Ait Ben Hadou to Tizi n’Tichka Pass over the High Atlas to Marrakech
Marrakech - Depart Aït Benhaddou to ascend the High Atlas mountains. Spot Mount Toubkal, the highest peak at 13,671 feet (4,167 m). Stop in Taddert to visit an Argan Oil Cooperative and learn about the processing of argan nuts and fruit for various uses, with samples to try. As you descend the High Atlas, notice the climate and landscape change from rocks to foothills and flat plains. Soon, you’ll be immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of Marrakech.
Jemaa el-Fnaa - After a long day of travel, settle into your hotel and spend the afternoon as you wish. In the early evening, Jemaa el-Fna Square comes alive with musicians, performers, snake charmers, games, and food stalls, offering a variety of entertainment. For a more relaxed experience, choose a café around the square to enjoy mint tea and a meal.

Marrakech - After breakfast at the Riad, begin exploring Marrakech, “the red city of Morocco.” Visit key historical and cultural sites, including the Majorelle Gardens, the Koutoubia Tower, the Saadian tombs, and the Bahia Palace. Essaouira - After breakfast, head to Essaouira. On the way, enjoy the sight of goats climbing argan trees and stop to see the argan forest and oil cooperative if desired. Essaouira, a coastal town, offers a chance to relax on the beach. Its medina blends history and culture with modern cafes and restaurants. Essaouira features a long promenade with a large sandy beach, safe for swimming. It’s an ideal escape from city life, offering a cooler coastal climate. Essaouira is a prime example of a late-18th-century fortified town, built according to contemporary European military architecture principles in a North African context.
