Highlights
  • Le Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau - After a 1-hour drive through rice fields and brackish ponds, during which your tour guide will introduce you to the peculiarities of the Camargue, you will be dropped off at the beautiful Bird Park of Pont de Gau (admission ticket included). Created by a family of nature lovers in 1949, the Bird Park is situated in the heart of the regional nature park of the Camargue, which is how we call the delta of the Rhône river. There’s no better place to observe the iconic bird of the region. An easy walk along marshes and ponds, following a well-signed footpath, will allow you to get very close to pink flamingos, that cohabit here with hundreds of other bird species.
  • Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer - The Camargue is also a country of traditions and history. Meet your driver again and head to the charming coastal town of Saintes Maries de la Mer. Discover the legend that led to the construction of the impressive fortified church Our Lady from the Sea, known in France for the celebrations it holds for each Mary’s feast, in May and October. The feast held in May draws large numbers of Roma Catholics to the town for a week. They come here to worship the relics of Sarah, their patron saint. Don’t miss a visit to the interiors of the church, dating back to the beginning of the 11th century, and enjoy a panoramic view from the sentry walk on the roof (4€/adult). Afterwards head to the beach, where you can go for a relaxing walk along the promenade, where reproductions of Van Gogh’s paintings are exhibited, or for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea. Don’t forget to taste some local specialties, like seafood, bull meat and rice (lunch not included).
  • Bac du Sauvage - After lunch, meet your guide again and continue the journey through wild landscapes and picturesque farms, ranches and salt marshes. Your tour guide will stop along the way to observe and photograph Camargue horses and bulls. These animals are a fundamental element of the region’s culture, where it is not unusal to come across a bull race or a folklore event involving horses.
  • Aigues-Mortes - Before getting back to Avignon, discover Aigues Mortes, one of the highlights of the region, a wonderfully preserved walled city dating back in the 13th century. Funded by King Louis IX in 1240 as a starting base for the Crusades, Aigues Mortes comes out from nowhere among salt pans and rice fields. Its massive rampart shelters narrow paved streets and small squares, where you can do some shopping and taste delicious local desserts. You can also opt for a walk on the sentry walk atop the rampart, which is the best way to spot the neighboring salt marshes.

We had a great time! - Veronica was a great tour guide for our day trip through the Camargue! She's super friendly and knowledgeable. White horses, pink flamingoes, and black bulls! - We loved this tour with our guide Veronica. We saw white horses, flamingoes, and black bulls. We had plenty of time to explore the bird park and then went into Saint Maries Sur Mer for lunch. Our afternoon included a stop in Antigues-mortes where we ate beautiful pastries and strolled around the walled city. Highly recommended to do this tour.

Great day out in the Camargue - I would certainly recommend Provans. Nicholas is a delight: lots of knowledge, well-shared, excellent English, a good driver. This was a repeat visit with him to the Camargue. Our visit coincided with a 'bridge' (long weekend) so it was much busier than on a previous day tour in March two years ago. This is not a guided nature tour - we didn't need that extra help - though is works well if you can look after that for yourself. Ideal for us: we were based in Avignon without a car.

It was a great experience! - This tour was a great way to check out the Camargue area. Plenty of time was given us to explore the three different stops: Parc ornithologique, Aigues Mortes, Stes Maries. The small group (we were three couples) allowed Nicolas, our guide, to answer all our individual questions. He was a wonderful purveyor of information throughout our drive down and back. Highly recommended!!!!

The easy and fun way to see the Camargue - This tour is well organized. You go to three places - the birds sanctuary (pink flamingos), Santa Marie’s de la mer (Mediterranean- sea food, Van Gogh sites, Church with the relics - patron saint of the gypsies) , Aigues Mortes to see the salt pans and a nice village. They allow a fair amount of time with a map and verbal direction on what to look for, where to eat, etc. This is nice because one can explore on one’s likes. The owner and guide Nicholas, is very knowledgeable and a pleasant communicator. A highly recommended company to check out.

Nice tour and well organized - The tour was individual and very well organized. On the way to Avignion we were able to easily find a conveniently located free parking lot and were picked up there. Thanks to Veronica for the wealth of information and the very nice atmosphere during the trip and at the individual stops on the tour. There was always enough time to look at everything and observe the animals. The group size is perfect. Language En, Fr, D no problem.

Flamingos in the Camargue - This was the best day in 3 weeks in Europe. Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable. She managed to stop by wild horses first, the had time for a long walk through the bird refuge. There were so many beautiful birds, especially flamingos. We visited 2 small historic towns and had a day to remember.
