Highlights
  • National Holocaust Museum - Through this former teacher training school hundreds of Jewish children, who were held captive in the crèche next door, were smuggled to relatively safe places with the help of the resistance during the Second World War. At this historic site, in the National Holocaust Museum, the story of the Holocaust is told in changing exhibitions and events in an artistic form and based on personal accounts.
  • Hollandsche Schouwburg - During the Second World War, the occupying forces made Jews assemble in this former theatre. Tens of thousands of people were held here, not knowing what fate awaited them, until they were deported to concentration and extermination camps. The Hollandsche Schouwburg is now a memorial site with a wall of names commemorating the Jewish victims. It also holds an exhibition about the Holocaust in the Netherlands.

Additional Information

The National Holocaust Museum tells the story of the Nazi persecution and murder of the Jews of the Netherlands. Before the Second World War, Jews and non-Jews lived side by side. They had the same rights. But during the war, the Nazis and their collaborators killed around six million Jews in Europe. That was the Holocaust or Shoah.

This is the first and only museum to relate the history of the persecution of the Jews of the entire Netherlands. Including the day-to-day life of Jews on the eve of the Second World War, the liberation as Jews experienced it, and how the Holocaust has been treated in our national culture of remembrance: all this is examined in the museum.

Very moving experience - We were on our way to the Resistance museum and we noticed this Museum so decided to go inside. It was a very small museum and our first impression was not to continue and leave as it didn’t look very big. We are glad we decided to go in. It was very informative about the holocaust and the affect it had on the Netherlands. We were inside for nearly 2hrs, there was so much to see. The ticket also covered several other museums and lasted a month. We didn’t have time to visit anywhere else but would definitely go back there if we are in Amsterdam again

A moving experience - The memorial is inside what used to be a theatre. The building was used as a deportation centre in 1942-43 so this is a most appropriate place for a memorial. There are exhibits of different ways to present information about the Holocaust on the upper floors. The museum is across the street and has some experimental exhibits in preparation for the permanent museum.
