A Journey Through Time and Nature

As a wildlife photographer with a deep-seated love for Africa, the Ethiopian Rift Valley Tour was an irresistible call to adventure. The promise of scenic views and wildlife encounters was enough to draw me back to this continent that has become a second home. Our journey began in Addis Ababa, where we met our guide, Muluken, and our driver, Hawaryat. Muluken, a former accountant turned tour guide, brought a wealth of local knowledge and a passion for sharing the beauty of his homeland.

Our first stop was the Tiya World Heritage Site, a place steeped in history and mystery. The stone grave markers, standing tall against the backdrop of the Ethiopian landscape, told stories of ancient warriors and heroes. As I photographed these silent sentinels, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to the past, a reminder of the rich tapestry of human history that Africa holds.

From Tiya, we journeyed to the shores of Lake Ziway. The lake, a haven for birdlife, was alive with the calls of Great White Pelicans and African Fish Eagles. We embarked on a boat trip, gliding across the water to islands teeming with birds. It was a photographer’s paradise, each frame capturing the vibrant life that thrives in this unique ecosystem.

Embracing Local Culture and Wildlife

Our adventure continued with a visit to a local village, where we were welcomed with a traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans filled the air as we learned about the cultural significance of this ritual. It was a moment of connection, a chance to engage with the local community and gain insight into their way of life.

The highlight of our journey was a walking safari in the Abiyatta Shalla Lakes National Park. As we trekked through the park, we encountered gazelles and ostriches, their graceful movements a testament to the wild beauty of the African landscape. Each sighting was a reminder of the importance of conservation, a cause close to my heart as a wildlife photographer.

Our day ended at the Rosetta Marina Beach Resort by Lake Langano. The resort, nestled in a picturesque location, offered a tranquil retreat after a day of exploration. As the sun set over the lake, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I reflected on the day’s adventures and the incredible diversity of life that Ethiopia has to offer.

The Road Less Traveled

The journey back to Addis Ababa was an adventure in itself. The road south was rough, a testament to the rugged beauty of the Ethiopian landscape. Our driver, Hawaryat, navigated the challenges with calm and skill, ensuring our safety amidst the chaos of potholes, livestock, and bustling traffic.

As we traveled, I was reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. Each stop along the way was an opportunity to support local communities and promote conservation efforts. The Ethiopian Rift Valley Tour was more than just a scenic journey; it was a chance to engage with the land and its people, to learn and to give back.

Returning to Addis on the new toll motorway was a stark contrast to the rugged roads we had traversed. The smooth, quiet drive was a fitting end to our adventure, a moment to reflect on the experiences that had enriched our journey.
