Day 2. Zanzibar - Arusha - Lake Eyasi - Karatu
Lake Eyasi - Flight to Arusha
Following an early breakfast, transfer to Zanzibar Airport for a 1 hour 15-minute flight to Arusha city. Upon exiting Arusha airport, our safari driver guide will meet us.
Lake Eyasi and local tribes
We will travel to the Lake Eyasi area, pausing at a viewpoint overlooking the renowned Lake Manyara.
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal, salty, shallow lake at the base of the Great Rift Valley, home to three distinct African tribes who have maintained their traditional lifestyles. They craft and wear costumes from animal skins, hunt with bows, and engage in gathering and cattle breeding. Engaging cultural excursions will offer a profound introduction to authentic East Africa, allowing you to connect with the history and traditions of African nations.
Dinner and overnight in the lodge
We will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a comfortable, authentic lodge surrounded by coffee trees, offering stunning views of the green hills and a spacious, clean pool.
Karatu – Crater Empakai – Serengeti
Serengeti National Park - Today, we enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. However, we will not descend into the legendary Ngorongoro Crater today. Instead, we will explore the natural wonder of Empakaai Crater.
Encircled by steep, forested cliffs, Empakaai Crater is less renowned than Ngorongoro Crater, yet its beauty is breathtaking. The turquoise lake occupying most of the crater floor attracts flamingos and waterfowl. Empakaai is home to hyenas, blue monkeys, and even elephants. On clear days, standing at the impressive rim of Empakaai Crater, we can see Ol Doinyo Lengai, one of the world’s youngest active volcanoes.
Accompanied by an armed ranger, we will trek to the crater and walk near the lake at the bottom of Empakaai. Transfer to Serengeti National Park with an en-route game drive. This evening, as we head to the lodge, we will begin spotting the inhabitants of the “endless plains.”
Serengeti - Safari in Serengeti in search of Great Migration
Serengeti National Park - Rise with the sunrise to the sounds of awakening nature. We embark on a full-day game drive across the vast Serengeti plains.
Serengeti, meaning “endless plains” in the Maasai language, has repeatedly been named the best safari destination in Africa. The abundance of big game, including rare predators, and the incredible variety of birds will amaze even seasoned travelers. Here, you have every chance to witness the legendary Great Migration of animals – an unparalleled privilege that will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. The migration of wildebeest and zebras depends on the season, and our experienced safari driver guides will use all their knowledge and expertise to show it to you.
We will dedicate the entire day to Serengeti, with a picnic lunch in the park.
Dinner and overnight in the lodge
Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater - Moshi
Ngorongoro Crater - We descend to the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive.
Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s eighth natural wonder, is the crater of an ancient collapsed volcano, teeming with big game. Ngorongoro Crater is the most densely populated wildlife area in Africa, where critically endangered black rhinos can be found. Let’s aim to encounter all of Africa’s Big Five!
Adventurous picnic lunch by the hippo lake
We will enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake, home to schools of hippos. Crafty birds, known as kites, will attempt to snatch our food, but our brave driver guide will protect us from their raids. Stay vigilant! This will add an extra wild element to our adventure!
Transfer to Moshi town
After an exhilarating game drive, we exit the crater and leave the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This evening, we head to Moshi town, located at the base of the “roof of Africa” – Kilimanjaro.
Dinner and overnight in hotel
Moshi - Kilimanjaro (Shira Plateau) - Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast at the hotel, we board our jeep and head to one of the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance gates.
Kilimanjaro is a majestic dormant volcano, the highest mountain in Africa, and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, standing at 5895 meters above sea level. It features three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, which we will trek to.
Upon arrival at the Londorossi gate of Kilimanjaro National Park (approximately 2 hours on the road, altitude 2250 m.a.s.l.), we ascend by jeep to the Morum Barrier point at an altitude of about 3400 m.a.s.l.
From here, we begin trekking on the Shira plateau to Shira-1 Camp. The total trekking time is between 1.5 to 2 hours, with the pace set by the mountain crew according to our preferences and capabilities.
We walk through the moorland, observing mountain flora and extraordinary landscapes. After a picnic lunch on the mountain, we trek back to the Morum Barrier point. We then transfer to Londorossi Gate by jeep.
Return to hotel, dinner, and overnight
Moshi - Lushoto, West Usambara
Usambara Mountains - After breakfast, we depart from Moshi and the Kilimanjaro Region, heading to the West Usambara Mountains, to Lushoto town (a 4.5-hour drive).
The Usambara Mountains (West and East parts) are among the most ancient mountain ranges, divided into two separate massifs by a 4-km alley. West Usambara is larger and higher, with its highest point reaching 2290m.
Cultural excursions in Lushoto
Lushoto is a cool, green town nestled in a fertile plain among the West Usambara Mountains at an altitude of about 1200m, surrounded by pine and eucalyptus trees mixed with banana and tropical plants. Here, you’ll find delightfully fresh air, lush landscapes, a pleasant climate, ancient forests, rich fauna, and the vibrant culture of the mountain tribe Sambaa, along with delicious organic farm products. It’s no wonder Lushoto is nicknamed “African Switzerland”!

Lushoto West Usambara
Usambara Mountains - Trekking and visiting a local village
We spend this day in the Western Usambara Mountains with light trekking to the Irente viewpoint and a visit to a local village of the Sambaa people, whose women skillfully create beautiful pottery by hand. Today is a day of immersion in the daily life of the mountain tribe and enjoying the mountain views.
Dinner and overnight in the lodge
We will reach a comfortable lodge surrounded by beautiful nature, have dinner, and relax.
Lushoto - Magoroto, East Usambara
Magoroto Forest Estate - After breakfast, we head southeast to another part of the Usambara mountain range, the East Usambara mountains (a 3-hour drive). The East Usambara is isolated from the West part.

The dances of the local mountain tribe Sambaa to the drums, a bonfire, and the positive vibes of this place are sure to leave a lasting impression on your soul!
Dinner and overnight at campsite
We’ll have a delicious open-air dinner near the lake. Accommodation is camping, with spacious tents right by the lake, featuring large, high-quality, and very comfortable mattresses and fresh bedding.
