Highlights
  • Stone Town - Exploring historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a captivating experience, but its labyrinthine, narrow streets can be disorienting. To stay on track and ensure you see all the important sites, consider hiring a private guide with extensive knowledge of the local culture. The tour is fully customizable to your interests, whether you’re shopping for local textiles, delving into history, or admiring Stone Town’s unique architecture.

  • Darajani Bazaar - Visitors will explore the old Estelle market in the heart of Darajani. They will encounter a variety of Indian Ocean fish, including those at fishing auctions, as well as spices provided by local farmers, fruits, vegetables, and the architecture of this historic market. The tour also includes a visit to the bridge that once separated New Town from Old Town, the latter of which is a UNESCO site. Accompanied by an experienced tour guide, travelers will spend 30 minutes visiting this market, observing local vendors selling fish, fruits, and other goods, and witnessing traditional Zanzibari attire, including women wearing hijabs and face masks.

  • Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral - Visitors will see the slave monument, slave chambers, and the church that once served as an auction site, with explanations about the East African slave trade.

  • Freddie Mercury Statue - The Freddie Mercury Museum in Zanzibar is located in Stone Town, the historic center of Zanzibar City. Housed in the former family home of Freddie Mercury, the legendary frontman of Queen who was born in Zanzibar in 1946, the museum features a collection of personal memorabilia and artifacts from his life and career. This includes photographs, handwritten lyrics, and items from his time with Queen, offering insights into his early years and his connection to Zanzibar. The museum provides a glimpse into the life of one of rock music’s most iconic figures, celebrating his musical achievements and his roots in Zanzibar.
