In the 17th century, Zaanse Schans was the largest industrial area globally. A Dutch windmill functioned as a small factory, each uniquely designed to produce various goods such as paint, cooking oil, paper, and wood.
Along the banks of the river Zaan, hundreds of windmills were busy grinding, pounding, sawing, and crushing. Products from Zaanse Schans were exported worldwide.
The dozen windmills at Zaanse Schans remain fully operational. On a breezy day, visitors can witness them spinning at full speed.
Admission to one of the windmills is included in this tour.
- Edam - The village of Edam is situated on a dike beside a large freshwater lake. Edam is renowned for its cheese production. It’s also an excellent spot to sample Dutch seafood, such as herring.
-
Simonehoeve - At this family-owned cheese farm, visitors can learn everything they ever wanted to know about cheese and wooden shoes.
Of course, there is a wide variety of cheeses to taste, as well as fruit wine and traditional Dutch cookies. Visitors can purchase their favorite cheese, clogs, and various souvenirs. - Monnickendam - Monnickendam is one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in Holland. The tour passes through the old center, showcasing the historic church with its stunning bell tower and typical Dutch vessels in the harbor. Monnickendam is a delightful place for lunch.
- Church Broek in Waterland - Located in the heart of Waterland is the village of Broek. Although only a fifteen-minute drive from Amsterdam, Broek in Waterland offers a completely different experience from the bustling city. Most of the old houses, farms, and even the church are made of wood, as stone buildings were too heavy for the soft soil.
There are still many beautiful large wooden houses with gardens full of flowers. It is very peaceful and quiet, and this tour operator is one of the few that visits, as large buses with tourists are not welcome.
- Waterland - Known as the wetlands of Amsterdam, Waterland features old villages, fields, and numerous ditches.
The landscape is characterized by narrow waterways called ‘sloten’, meadows, reeds, cows, sheep, horses, and birds, with farms and church towers dotting the horizon. This area is primarily peatland and is also rich with lakes.
The landscape is quintessentially Dutch, unmatched anywhere else.
