- Sanctuary Wood - Sanctuary Wood reportedly earned its name in October 1914 when it served as a ‘sanctuary’ for stragglers waiting to rejoin their units. The landowners recognized early on that the wood would attract pilgrims and tourists. The trench lines and dugouts were preserved, and the damaged trees were fenced in.
Today, Sanctuary Wood is regarded by many as offering the best-preserved trenches on the Western Front.
In addition to battlefield artifacts, the museum’s interior features 3D stereoscopic photographs of vivid scenes captured during the war.
- Menin Gate Memorial - The Menin Gate is considered a symbol of World War I and serves as a memorial to the missing. Inside, the names of approximately 55,000 Commonwealth soldiers reported missing before August 15, 1917, are inscribed. Every evening at 8 p.m. sharp, the “Last Post” is played under the Menin Gate. Daily activities pause momentarily to honor the fallen soldiers of WWI.
- Ieper (Ypres) - Stroll around to collect souvenirs and enjoy lunch.
- In Flanders Fields Museum - This museum narrates the story of the First World War in the West Flanders front region. It is housed in the reconstructed Cloth Hall of Ypres, a significant symbol of wartime hardship and subsequent recovery.
From this symbolic location, the museum also highlights the contemporary landscape as one of the last tangible witnesses of war history. During the visit, after ascending the restored Belfry tower, visitors can gaze over the city and the surrounding battlefields.
- Passchendaele Museum - Discover the life of soldiers during WWI in the dugout and trenches. With unique artifacts, the museum guides visitors through the Battle of Passchendaele.
- Tyne Cot Cemetery - Currently the largest Commonwealth war cemetery globally in terms of burials, Tyne Cot Cemetery is the final resting place or commemoration site for 11,961 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War. The TYNE COT MEMORIAL forms the north-eastern boundary of the cemetery and honors nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who perished in the Ypres Salient.
