-
Observation Point Trailhead - Look for the sign for Observation Point Trail. For an elevated view of Old Faithful’s eruption, this path leads to the ideal vantage point. It’s an uphill journey of about a mile round trip, taking approximately 30 minutes.
-
Anemone Geysers - Named by geologist Arnold Hague, who thought the vents resembled the petals of the anemone flower.
-
Beehive Geyser - It appears as a large, harmless beehive on the ground until it shoots boiling water 100 feet into the air! The Beehive erupts for 5 minutes every 10 to 20 hours.
-
Marmot Cave Geyser - This spot is known as “Marmot Cave Geyser.” A yellow-bellied marmot once lived in the small cave, but it relocated years ago. It seems that water heated by magma isn’t ideal for marmot homes!
-
Lion Geyser - To the left, notice a lion, a lioness, and two cubs. Just kidding—they’re not real lions. They’re cone geysers! Interestingly, they’re not named for their resemblance to lions!
-
Sawmill Geyser - It resembles a bluish hot spring, but it erupts! When it does, it sounds like a whirring sawmill. It’s connected underground to a complex of thermal features, making its eruptions unpredictable.
-
Grand Geyser - To the right is a geyser that puts on a spectacular display. It’s called “Grand Geyser,” the most powerful predictable geyser in the world! It’s a fountain-type, so no cones—just a pool. If Old Faithful’s eruptions impress, wait until you see this one.
-
Beauty Pool - On the right is a stunning hydrothermal feature named “Beauty Pool”! It’s a blue-green hot spring with a thick ring of orange heat-loving microbes—thermophiles—around it.
-
Chromatic Pool - This is Beauty Pool’s sister, Chromatic Pool. It’s a smaller hot spring, only 30 feet in diameter, but the colors are vivid! This pool is about 133.1 degrees—too hot for a shower, too cold for coffee.
-
Giant Geyser - Giant’s cone is made of geyserite or sinter, standing about 12 feet tall. Some say it resembles the Coliseum in Rome! It’s one of the tallest geysers in Yellowstone, but not the only one in this cluster.
-
Grotto Geyser - Straight ahead is Grotto Geyser. This was nearly the site of disaster during the 1870 expedition!
-
Morning Glory Pool - The Morning Glory Pool is named for its resemblance to morning glory flowers. Green ones like it hot. Yellow ones like it pretty hot. Orange like it warm. And red like it kinda warm.
-
Daisy Geyser - Daisy Geyser is one of Yellowstone’s most predictable geysers. It erupts every 2 to 4 hours for about 4 minutes. This one is unique because its fountain streams out at an angle to the ground!
-
Crested Pool - Crested Pool is 42 feet deep and has an average temperature of 191 degrees! That’s nearly as hot as the hottest cup of coffee.
-
Castle Geyser - Castle Geyser is notable for its massive calcified cone. It erupts every 10 to 12 hours, with eruptions lasting about 20 minutes and reaching 90 feet high. After the main eruption, steam hisses from Castle Geyser for around 35 minutes.
-
Old Faithful Inn - This is no ordinary inn. The building’s designer, Robert Reamer, wanted it to blend with the park. He used rhyolite for the inn’s foundation, formed in Yellowstone’s caldera! For the inn’s walls, he used local lodgepole pine trees!
