The park is home to Japanese Macaques, commonly referred to as Snow Monkeys. Nestled in the monkeys’ natural environment, the park is situated in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi, close to the onsen towns of Shibu and Yudanaka. A man-made pool, where the monkeys frequently gather, is just a short walk from the park’s entrance. Visitors are likely to encounter monkeys along the path to the pool. These monkeys live in large social groups, and their interactions are quite entertaining to watch. They are accustomed to humans, allowing for close observation as they largely ignore their human visitors.
