Zhaishan Tunnel - As you enter Zhaishan Tunnel, you will be filled with awe at this massive structure. Discover remnants of Taiwan’s military history at Zhaishan Tunnel, built to withstand bombings from mainland China during the 1958 shelling of the island. The 101 m (331 ft) long tunnel was the sole route for transporting supplies to the island’s defenders. Construction began in 1958 and continued non-stop for three years until completion. The tunnel, entirely made of granite, is an engineering marvel. Its water channel, 357 m (1,171 ft) long, comfortably accommodates 42 small boats and is connected to the tunnel. It was abandoned in 1986 due to sediment buildup.
金鼎祥貢糖 - Visit a store that sells Gong Tang, a popular souvenir made from peanuts, one of Kinmen’s agricultural products. Gong Tang, meaning “tribute candy,” involves manually hitting peanuts to create the candy. Available in various flavors and textures, such as plain peanuts, peanuts with coconut, and peanuts with sesame, it offers both crunchy and chewy options. 金太武一條根本舖 中興店 - Next, visit a store offering “金門一條根 Jin Men Yi Tiao Gen,” translated as “A Kinmen Root.” Found in the Kinmen area, this herb, known as 阔叶大豆 (Glycine tomentella Hayata), is reputed in pharmaceutical books to enhance blood circulation, improve general health, and be particularly beneficial for arthritis and body aches.
Kinmen Island - No visit to Kinmen is complete without sampling Kaoliang liquor. Known for its aromatic, sweet, spicy, and brisk qualities, it is distinctive. In the 16th century, Japanese pirates frequently attacked Kinmen, prompting the government to fortify the island with defenses. Since 1949, Kinmen became a battleground between the Chinese Communist and Kuomintang forces. Battlefield relics include the Guningtou Battle Museum and the August 23rd Artillery Battle Museum.
