Drive from Würzburg, the historic university town on the River Main, to Weikersheim, renowned for its Renaissance castle with a magnificent “Rittersaal” and Baroque court garden. Pass through quaint wine villages in the Tauber Valley to reach Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany’s most romantic town. It’s a sight to behold: the churches, the perfectly preserved town walls that stretch for two kilometers and are walkable, and the market square that people cross on their way to the Plönlein, the Crime Museum, or the tower walkway. Just below the viewing platform, a stork has perched on the roof of the town hall. It watches the hustle and bustle below for a while before spreading its wings and flying off to its nest on the Markustor.
