In the Old Town you can also find the Wawel Hill – with the Cathedral and the Royal Castle (until 1611 Wawel was the formal seat of Polish monarchy – it was the place of royal coronations ), Town Hall Tower, St. Mary’s Basilica, Krakow Barbican and Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), thousands of bars and delightful regional restaurants, many historic buildings and horse-driven cabs.
  • Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau - The concentration camp in Auschwitz was established by German Nazis on the outskirts of the town Oswiecim in 1940. After the war, the camp was turned into museum displaying evidence of the genocide. Block no. 11, known as the Death Block, was where people were murdered also at the “Wall of Death”. Outside the camp, there is a gas chamber, where 70,000 people were killed in 1940-1943. In 1941, 3 kilometres from Oswiecim, in the former village of Brzezinka, the German Nazis established a new camp called Auschwitz II Birkenau. In 1942-1945, approx. 1.5 million people lived and died here. Most of them (90%) were Jews, others were Poles, Gypsies, Russians and prisoners from 28 countries of Europe, people of all nationalities and political and religious persuasions. Since 1944, transports of prisoners from all over the continent entered directly through the “Gate of Death”.
In 1979, Auschwitz – Birkenau Concentration Camp was listed a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site.

A must-see experience. Don’t hesitate, book this tour. - This may seem like a very strenuous day when you consider the timeline. However, I highly encourage you to book this tour. Visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau is a very emotional experience but I believe it is something everyone should make the time to do if you’re traveling to Poland. Additionally, Krakow is a gorgeous and vibrant city that I would spend several days exploring, if I could. Due to time constraints for our trip we booked this tour and we had absolutely no regrets. AB Everest made everything so easy and took care of all of the arrangements. They were incredibly responsive and helpful with questions before the tour (thank you, Agnieszka)! My mom, daughter, and I were impressed from beginning to end and we were so glad that we prioritized seeing the concentration camps and that we also had time to enjoy a meal, shopping, and sightseeing in Krakow. I would book this tour again or another tour with this operator in a heartbeat given our first experience.

Just do it. Save yourself the hassle of doing yourself. - I have no complaints. The tour was great. I will gladly pay a little extra to have native Polish speakers take care of all the logistics/trains/busses for me like they did on this tour. (Good luck doing everything by yourself!!) Just keep in mind this is an all day adventure. You're basically traveling half way down into Poland. I would recommend to not drink too much water & coffee once you get into Krakow because the bus ride is about 90 minutes each way. The bus ride is beautiful though because you get to see Poland beyond the major cities. For the train back, I recommend that you give yourself a good 45 minutes to find the correct platform because the Polish are not the best with customer service. As for the tour itself, lets just say I would not want to be there after dark!

Warsaw to Auschwitz-Birkenau one day tour - Excellent experience - I cannot recommend highly enough. We were picked up from our accommodation, dropped at train, with the driver taking us to the platform. Picked up from the train platform in Krakow. Dropped in the centre of Krakow to look around while other customers were collected. This was some lovely free time to enjoy the beautiful area. Taken to Auschwitz in a comfortable van where we didn't have to wait, a guide was ready to take our group through the museum. Then the same service to Birkenau with the same guide. Then taken back to Krakow where we had free time to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant before a quick walk to the train station to head back to Warsaw. Where once again we were picked up by a driver and returned to our accommodation. We knew it was going to be a long day but the pick ups, drop offs and van rides made all the difference. perfectly orgainised and run tour.

Worthwhile visit even with long day - If you want to visit Auschwitz from Warsaw, this is probably the best value for money unless you're in a big group and can split up a private van. The coordination of the trains by the transport company was pretty straightforward, as were the directions around meeting and timing of the buses to/from Krakow. They offer multiple "slow" trains as well as "fast" trains... honestly the difference is only 40 mins between the two types and I looked more at the arrival time than the duration, but the fast train was much more comfortable (the slow train you're in a small compartment facing opposite someone, so it feels cramped, while the fast train you face the back of a seat and feels roomier). I took the early slow train to Krakow to give me the most amount of time in Krakow before leaving for Auschwitz (~3.5hrs) - that allowed me to wander around Old Town and do the basic Castle 1 ticket to explore Wawel Castle as well as grab something to eat at nearby plac novy and walk back to the pickup point. I was traveling solo so did not plan on grabbing something to eat when we returned to Krakow, and so I took the earliest train back which happened to be the fast train which like I said I appreciated was much more comfortable rather than the fact that it was a little bit quicker. As far as the experience in Auschwitz and Birkenau, it's a guided tour that is standard for anyone visiting - I don't think you would get something much different from one company or another or even if you tried to plan to visit yourself. Our group was almost all solo or couple travelers - I think the day and amount of walking might be too long and tiring for kids/families. Overall a very long and exhausting day but well worth it to visit such a historic place.

Ok tour of Auschwitz - This tour is very long. From 445am to 9pm when you board your train back to Warsaw. Our tour company was very punctual at picking us up from our hotel and the train station. They also took care of all the tickets and guide for both camps. The only thing I didn’t like was our van was very hot and uncomfortable; it was a 90 min drive back and forth to the camps from the train station. They don’t tell you anything about Warsaw, not even on the car ride to the camps. They just drive you around. Our tour guide at the camp was ok, she talked too fast and didn’t really answer questions. Overall, it’s definitely cheaper to do this tour on your own but if you don’t want to do the planning then this is for you.

Abandoned in Krakow at 7:30 pm - Being left in Krakow without anyway back to the train. Missing our train because they got us back late. Arriving home at 11:30 at night even though we paid extra for the speed train.
