- Lake Vouliagmeni - Nestled in the Athenian Riviera, Lake Vouliagmeni stands as Attica’s concealed gem of natural beauty. Surrounded by a picturesque setting, this unique geological marvel beckons visitors to explore its wonders. The lake’s saline waters are perpetually replenished by both the ocean and subterranean hot springs, offering an unparalleled thermal spa experience. Majestic cliffs, warm mineral-rich waters, intricate underwater passageways, and lush flora combine to create this extraordinary geological occurrence. Its present shape came to be when the cavern’s ceiling collapsed due to erosion from the hot waters coursing through it. Lake Vouliagmeni is recognized as part of the NATURA 2000 network and is designated as a Place of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture.
Beyond the lake’s edge lies a complex subaquatic cave system, which has been mapped to a distance of 3,123 meters, yet its full extent remains unknown.
- Temple of Poseidon - The promontory of Sounio sits at the southernmost point of the Attica region. Its shores are characterized by rugged cliffs that rise sharply from the sea, culminating in a significant elevation. To the west, at the base of the cliffs, lies a small bay, divided by a narrow strip of land from another bay to the east. Sounio is celebrated not only for its strategic position but also for the remnants of the ancient Temple of Poseidon found there. Homer’s first mention of Sounio, referred to as the “Sounion sanctuary” in the Odyssey, recounts that Menelaus paused here to inter his helmsman Frontis on his voyage home from Troy. The site is also mentioned by Sophocles, Euripides, Pausanias, and Vitruvius. In recent times, the surrounding area has been designated as a national park due to its ecological significance.
The Doric temple visible today was constructed from local Agrileza marble atop the earlier temple’s remains. Its pediment was adorned with ornate sculptures.
