- Temple of Olympian Zeus - The Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a former massive temple in the heart of Athens, Greece’s capital. It was dedicated to “Olympian” Zeus, a title reflecting his role as the chief of the Olympian gods. Construction started in the 6th century BC under the Athenian tyrants, who aimed to create the greatest temple of the ancient world, but it wasn’t finished until the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, 638 years after it began. In the Roman era, the temple, which featured 104 colossal columns, was famed as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues of the ancient world.
- Panathenaic Stadium - The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. As one of Athens’ main historic attractions, it is the only stadium globally made entirely of marble.
An initial stadium was constructed on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) around 330 BC, mainly for the Panathenaic Games. The stadium was unearthed in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After renovations, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Throughout the 20th century, it served various purposes and was again an Olympic venue in 2004. It is the endpoint for the annual Athens Classic Marathon and the final venue in Greece for the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation.
- Mount Lycabettus - Lycabettus Hill, also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos, or Lykavittos, is a Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens, Greece, standing 300 meters (908 feet) above sea level. Pine trees cover its base, and its two peaks feature the 19th-century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant.
- Arch of Hadrian - The Arch of Hadrian, commonly known in Greek as Hadrian’s Gate, is a monumental gateway that somewhat resembles a Roman triumphal arch. It is believed that the arch was constructed to celebrate the arrival (adventus) of Roman Emperor Hadrian and to honor his numerous contributions to the city.
The arch bore two inscriptions, facing opposite directions, naming both Theseus and Hadrian as founders of Athens.
- Changing of the Guard Ceremony - One of the most distinctive experiences in Athens is the changing of the guards. The presidential guards, or Evzones, vigilantly guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Hellenic Parliament building around the clock, enduring the coldest winter nights and hottest summer days. Evzones are an elite unit of the Greek army, and being selected as an Evzone is a significant honor for a Greek guard.
