- Voroneț Monastery - Located in the Romanian village of Voroneț, now part of Gura Humorului, the Voroneț Monastery is a medieval marvel. It is one of the renowned painted monasteries in southern Bukovina, Suceava County.[1] Built by Stephen the Great in 1488 in just 3 months and 3 weeks, it commemorates the victory at the Battle of Vaslui. Often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the East,” the frescoes at Voroneț are famous for their vibrant “Voroneț blue.”[1]
Did you know that Stephen the Great founded the VoroneČ› Monastery?
Known as the “Sistine Chapel of the East,” it draws tens of thousands of tourists globally each year, boasting at least three unique features that make it a must-see on any journey through Moldavia and Bucovina.
The most striking feature of the church’s artwork, both inside and out, is the remarkable background color – the renowned Voroneț blue!
- Humor Monastery - To truly appreciate the significance of religion to the people, one must tour Romania and witness the numerous houses of worship that have been built and destroyed by adversaries throughout history.
In an effort to safeguard their spiritual treasures, people constructed churches away from prying eyes, some hidden deep in the woods, others nestled within rock caves at high altitudes. Humor Monastery, built around 500 years ago, exemplifies a fortified monastery that has withstood the test of time.
After the first church here, built around 1400, was destroyed, a second one was constructed in 1530 with thick river rock walls, designed to endure through the ages.
- Sucevița Monastery - Sucevița and Voroneț are among the most beautiful Romanian monasteries, part of the international cultural and spiritual heritage, making them essential stops on any trip to Romania and northern Moldavia.
Even without having read the Bible, the biblical scenes and icons adorning the walls of Sucevița Monastery provide a vivid and stunning visual aid in understanding the history of Christianity.
The fortified church is like an open book for visitors, and seeing it in person reveals why it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list of cultural landmarks.
- Moldovița Monastery - For a spiritual journey to a place resonating with the prayers of countless visitors throughout history, venture through the Carpathians and Balkans to one of Romania’s oldest monastic settlements, established in 1532, home to the Moldovița Monastery.
The fortified church blends Byzantine, Gothic, and Moldavian styles, but its unique mural artwork, both inside and out, truly captivates visitors.

The unique pieces of art created by Lucia Condrea are the largest in number; very old painted eggs collected from areas inhabited by “hutuli”; and pieces of art collected by Lucia Condrea from artists of various countries (international collection).
Among Romanian customs, the tradition of painting eggs for Easter is the most cherished and artistic. Nowhere else but in Bucovina is the egg so lovingly regarded, and the tradition elevated to an art form.
