The Battle of Long Tan - This comprehensive private tour, customizable for former GIs and diggers who served in the Vietnam War, offers a visit to selected sites where participants can meet individuals who either lived through the war or grew up in its aftermath. Whether an American or Australian veteran, or a history enthusiast interested in war sites and relics, visitors will experience Vietnam as it stands today.
Explore Long Tan and Nui Dat, significant locations of the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps’ participation in the Vietnam War, or choose a tour of Bien Hoa and Long Binh, both of which were major US Army bases.
Option 1: Long Tan and Nui Dat Task Force Base After hotel pickup in Ho Chi Minh City, the first destination on this full-day private tour is the former site of Australia’s Nui Dat Task Force Base (Nui Dat SAS Hill).
Due to the ANZAC occupation of Nui Dat, all residents within a 2.5-mile (4-km) radius of the base were relocated, including those from Long Tan and Long Phuoc villages. On the afternoon of August 18, 1966, D Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, despite being significantly outnumbered, successfully repelled a large Viet Cong attack of regimental strength during an intense 3-hour battle.
Today, little remains of this military camp except for the columns of the main gate. The guide will show visitors the former runway, now a street in the local village, and the old helipad, which has been converted into a soccer field.
Afterward, drive past the site of Horseshoe Fire Support Base (access is restricted due to the presence of land mines) to the Discourtesy Rubber Plantation.
Visit the Long Tan Cross Memorial, a central point for remembrance, before proceeding to the Long Phuoc Tunnels. Similar to other tunnel systems in Vietnam, Long Phuoc featured meeting areas, first aid stations, and underground fighting pits.
Enjoy insightful commentary from the guide while exploring each site and travel to Ba Ria for lunch before returning to Ho Chi Minh City, with drop-off at the hotel.
