- Neuer Markt - Despite its name, the “New Market” square is actually the second oldest market square in Vienna, with a name that has remained unchanged for 800 years.
- Albertinaplatz - This square, situated between the State Opera building and the Hofburg (the old imperial palace), features a memorial against war and fascism. It is also home to the famous Hotel Sacher and Cafe Mozart.
- The Hofburg - The former imperial residence, constructed over 700 years, boasts inner courtyards from different eras. We’ll pass statues of emperors Joseph II and Francis II/I, and if we’re lucky, we might see the world-renowned Lipizzaner horses.
- Graben and Kohlmarkt - Two of Vienna’s most famous and bustling streets, known for their high-end shops, the Demel cafe, and the Plague Monument, in that order.
- Kurrentgasse - One of the last remaining baroque streets, offering a time-travel-like experience as you stroll through this old, narrow alley.
- Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial - Once the center of Vienna’s medieval Jewish community, this square is rich in history. Today, it houses one of Vienna’s Jewish Museums and the Holocaust Memorial.
- Hoher Markt - Formerly Vienna’s main market square and the center of the ancient Roman garrison, this square was also a popular execution site in medieval times.
- St. Rupert’s Church (Ruprechtskirche) - The oldest standing church in Vienna and arguably the oldest part of the town. It’s also the center of Vienna’s nightlife, for those interested.
- Griechengasse - Known as the “Greek Quarter” of Vienna, this area features some of the oldest taverns and reminders of the legendary Dear Augustin.
- Wollzeile - The old University district, home to some of Vienna’s most famous coffee houses.
- Deutschordenskirche - The headquarters of the legendary Teutonic Order, where you can sense a bit of crusader history before we head back to the cathedral, which is right behind it.
- St. Stephen’s Cathedral - We return to our starting point, hopefully with a deeper understanding of Vienna.

This walk brings you through all four historic quarters of Vienna’s old town. Experience over a thousand years of history and stroll through hidden alleys right behind the main sights. See more than just the usual tourist streets, walk through hidden alleys and historic inner yards. This walk will combine the roman and medieval Vienna, the imperial glory under the Habsburgs, the (also quite literally) dark years in the 20th century and also will let you experience modern Vienna, that is once again the city in the very heart of Europe. It will not just be a dry line of numbers and information, instead I will show you also the funny side of Vienna’s history and the absurdities this old town hast to offer. Can’t hurt having a laugh. After all you are not on a school trip. If you happen to book this tour as part of a school trip then we will adjust :)
