Burg Leopoldsberg - Leopoldsberg: Vienna’s Majestic Gateway to the Alps.
Situated 425 meters above the Danube, Leopoldsberg signifies the northeastern boundary of the Alps and the entrance to the Vienna Woods. It is more than just a hill — it is a vibrant blend of history, nature, and stunning views.
Leopoldsberg has been inhabited since the Stone Age, with remnants of Celtic and Roman presence still evident in the ground. In the 17th century, the Leopoldskirche, a baroque church dedicated to Saint Leopold, was constructed at the peak — its white façade now serves as a landmark visible from across the city.
The hill also played a significant role in Vienna’s defense during the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683, when allied forces assembled nearby to fend off Ottoman invaders. -
Kahlenberg - First recorded in documents from the 12th century, Kahlenbergerdorf was once an independent municipality before becoming part of Vienna’s Döbling district in 1892. Its name is derived from the nearby Kahlenberg, although interestingly, the hill now known as Leopoldsberg was originally called Kahlenberg until 1693.
The village has a rich history in viticulture, with wine production dating back over 2,500 years, starting with Celtic settlers. Monasteries and noble families once owned vineyards here, and the area was even mined for silver in the 16th century — although those deposits were short-lived.
Authentic Wine Culture
Today, Kahlenbergerdorf is renowned for its authenticity and rustic charm. Narrow, winding streets lead to traditional Buschenschanken (wine taverns), where visitors can enjoy local wines amidst steep vineyard slopes. The Weinrundwanderweg, a circular wine hiking trail established in 1998, starts here and takes visitors through the region’s finest vineyards.
