Venosa was a significant city during Roman times, its prominence was largely due to the Via Appia, which facilitated notable trade activities. Today, Venosa is recognized as the birthplace of the well-known author Horace Flacco, who penned the famous phrase ‘Carpe Diem’.
The guided tour begins at the Archaeological Park where you can explore the thermal baths, the domus, the SS. Trinity, and the amphitheater.
Post visiting the amphitheater, the tour proceeds to the S.S. Trinity which includes the Ancient Church. Behind the apse, there’s the ‘unfinished’ church constructed to accommodate a larger congregation of faithfuls, initiated in the mid-1100s but was never completed.
The Venosa tour persists in the historical center with the 16th-century Aragonese castle Pirro del Balzo. Within the castle premises is the national archaeological museum housing primarily Roman artifacts.
The guided tour concludes with an external visit to the property commonly referred to as Horace’s house, which dates back to the 2nd century BC.
