Before becoming the capital under Portuguese control, Old Goa was already a bustling city and served as the capital of the Bahmani Sultan Adil Shah empire. The Portuguese, led by commander Afonso de Albuquerque, arrived in 1510 and seized the city from Adil Shah, the ruler of the Bijapur Kingdom. Their mission was to engage in trade and eventually promote Christianity.
