Previously, Old Goa was not only the capital of Goa but also a bustling city, even before the Portuguese era. It was once the heart of the empire of Bahmani Sultan Adil Shah. The Portuguese, led by Afonso de Albuquerque, arrived in 1510 and seized the city from Adil Shah, the Bijapur Kingdom’s leader. Their main intentions for the East were commerce and spreading Christianity.
