Lust, gluttony, greed, envy, pride, and various other sins might seem like the plot of a soap opera, but they can also be linked to the Knights of St. John, especially as the Order began to decline. Over the years, its finances, military strength, and even morals deteriorated, turning the Golden Age of Malta under the Knights into a distant memory.

This decline is perhaps most evident in the lives of some of the Grand Masters. The monastic vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience were swiftly abandoned. Poverty was contradicted by the opulent palaces and grand baroque architecture that still grace the city. Chastity gave way to mistresses and courtesans, eventually leading to illegitimate children. Obedience was only valued when it was time to dethrone an old Grand Master.

The reality is that in later years, after the Holy War against the Ottoman Empire ended and crusades were no longer relevant, many knights lacked the vocation or lost it upon arriving in Valletta—a city brimming with temptations. Many succumbed, both young and old, spending their leisure time gambling, dueling, and pursuing prostitutes.
