  Join historian Catherine Weinraub for a moving 90-minute cemetery tour at the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex, honoring seven volunteer firefighters who perished in Alexandria’s tragic fire of November 17, 1855.
  As a Friendship Fire Engine Association trustee and expert on Alexandria’s fires, Catherine guides you through the final resting places of these heroes who died fighting the devastating blaze at Dowell’s China Shop. Visit young confectioner George Appich in the Presbyterian Cemetery, three firefighters in the Methodist Protestant Cemetery, and J. Carson Greene’s recently discovered unmarked grave in Christ Church Cemetery.
  Learn about the arson fire’s causes, the midnight alarm, the fatal 4am wall collapse, and Alexandria’s overwhelming grief expressed through tolling bells and massive funeral processions.
  The tour also visits graves of other Alexandria firefighters, including Chief George Petty, the first firefighter to die on duty since 1855.
