Island Brews and Hidden Gems: A St. Maarten Brewery Adventure
Drawn by the promise of island brews and a unique brewery experience, I ventured to Upper Prince’s Quarter in St. Maarten. What awaited was a delightful blend of storytelling, craftsmanship, and community spirit that left a lasting impression.
A Surprising Start
As I stood at the entrance of the Caribbean Brewing Company in Upper Prince’s Quarter, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the unassuming facade. It was a bit of a hidden gem, the kind of place you’d walk past without a second glance. But as any seasoned traveler knows, the best experiences often lie behind the most unexpected doors. I was greeted by Simran, our lively host for the day, who welcomed us with a full pint of beer—her version of a ‘sample.’
While waiting for the rest of the group, I savored the first sip of a crisp lager, feeling the cool breeze of the island air. Simran’s warm hospitality set the tone for the day, and I could already tell this was going to be a memorable adventure. Her storytelling was captivating, weaving the tale of the brewery’s origins with a twist that kept us all on our toes. It was clear that Simran had a knack for making everyone feel like part of the family.
The Brewing Journey
Once the group was assembled, we embarked on a journey through the brewing process. Simran led us through the brewery floor, explaining each step from milling the ingredients to the final bottling. The state-of-the-art technology was impressive, but it was the passion and dedication of the small team that truly stood out. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always appreciated the artistry and skill that goes into crafting something exceptional, whether it’s riding a wave or brewing a perfect pint.
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly tasting the stout straight from the vat. The rich, velvety texture and robust flavor were a testament to the craftsmanship of the brewers. It was a sensory experience that resonated with my love for the ocean—complex, invigorating, and deeply satisfying. As we moved through the different beer styles, from the light lager to the bold IPA, each sip was a new discovery, much like exploring a hidden cove or catching the perfect wave.
A Toast to Island Life
After the tour, we returned to the taproom for more ‘samples’ and a final mixed drink to take with us. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with laughter and clinking glasses filling the air. I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of koozies and a bottle opener from the gift shop as mementos of the day.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that it wasn’t just the quality of the beer that made this tour special. It was the sense of community and connection fostered by Simran and her team. In a world where everything seems to be moving at breakneck speed, it was refreshing to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of island life.
As I made my way back to the cruise port, drink in hand, I felt a renewed appreciation for the beauty and charm of St. Maarten. This small, family-owned brewery had left a big impression, and I knew I’d be back to share the experience with friends and family. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of those island beers and the warm embrace of the Caribbean sun.
