Barong is a mythical creature resembling a panther in Balinese lore, reigning as the sovereign of spirits, commander of the forces of good, and the nemesis of Rangda, the demonic monarch and progenitor of all protective spirits in Bali’s mythic lore. The eternal conflict between Barong and Rangda is dramatized in the Barong dance, symbolizing the perpetual struggle between benevolence and malevolence.

The Barong animal mask dance, along with the sanghyang dance, are recognized as authentic Balinese dances, with origins that predate the influence of Hinduism. Indigenous Indonesians with Austronesian lineage often perform comparable mask dances that depict spirits of ancestors or nature; the Hudoq dance of the Dayak people is one such example. The name ‘barong’ is believed to originate from the local word ‘bahruang’, which is now akin to the Indonesian term ‘beruang’, meaning ‘bear’. It signifies a benevolent spirit that assumed the form of an animal to act as a guardian of the forest.
