Highlights

Putu resides in her ancestral village within a traditional family compound. Upon your arrival, you’ll meet her grandparents, her husband Pasta, and their three children. Putu’s culinary journey began in her childhood, assisting her grandmother with daily meal preparations. Over time, her cooking skills have blossomed into both a career and a personal passion. She currently works as a cook at two private villas, crafting fresh and innovative Balinese dishes to delight her guests. Putu takes great pride in her presentation, skillfully decorating her dishes with intricately carved fruits and vegetables. At home, she is in charge of preparing temple offerings, ranging from small offerings to large fruit towers that she carries on her head during temple ceremonies. Additionally, Putu makes homemade jamu, traditional health tonics made from turmeric.

Putu’s grandparents are rice farmers, and you’ll be served their homegrown rice with your meal. Putu and her family will give you a tour of their compound, showcasing their family temple and explaining the various objects within it. They have a beautiful orchard where they cultivate jackfruit, cacao, durian, coffee, and bananas. They also raise pigs, ducks, chickens, and a cow.

Additional Information

Join your host Putu in her kitchen for a private, hands-on cooking class. Unlike many other TripAdvisor tours, this is a private experience. You and your host will prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill, Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients.

Putu’s kitchen is simple, with only a two-burner cooktop but you will be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she prepares a complex menu with multiple dishes. You will taste a variety of authentic dishes with potential ones being Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), a curry dish (either chicken, fish or vegetarian) or perhaps a variety of pepes (foods seasoned with local spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare with your host and her family.

A truly special glimpse into Balinese life and food - This was a highlight of our family trip to Bali. Putu and family were so generous opening their village, home and family temple to us - it was a fascinating glimpse into Balinese culture and way of life. The cooking in an outside kitchen amongst the family's back garden and orchard was so special. The range of dishes were excellent, ingredients fresh, and the instructions really clear. There was so much food! We took the rest home in containers for dinner so no waste. My children aged 10 and 8 became absolutely immersed in this activity and could participate fully. I loved seeing them learning snd totally engaged. Putu has such a kind, calm, lovely nature - we felt very welcome and because it was just our family in the group it made it really special. Travel and communication with Putu was seamless. Would definitely recommend this experience. There are other cheaper options for cooking classes but they lack the personal and special priviledge of having someone opening their home and sharing what their life is like, so every dollar is well worth it in my view.

Authentic Balinese cooking experience - What an amazing experience to be welcomed into a traditional Balinese home and be shown how to cook traditional Balinese food like your ‘mum’ would make (if your mum was Balinese of course). After being shown the family temple and the huge food garden Putu, our host and owner, walked us through making an amazing five course meal. A great memory of our trip and we look forward to being able to make the dishes for our friends. Thank you Putu and Made.

Amazing Balinees cooking experience! - Amazing cookingclass! It's at an authentic Balinees familyhouse. The ingrediënts you use are all from their own garden. She starts with showing you the family house and the garden with all the amazing fruits, vegetables and herbs. The chili's are great;). You will cook 5 different Balinees dishes, that are all very tastefull. The host and her friend are really friendly and helpfull. When all the dishes are ready, you can enjoy all the food you made along with a beer and a traditional Balinees Arak. If you want you can even take the food back to your place. I'm a head-chef from the Netherlands and i really liked this inspiring cookingclass. It was a great experience, even for some that already has some experience in cooking.

Memorable cooking experience surrounded by rice paddies and hosted by a very welcoming Balinese family. - A truly memorable cooking experience! You are welcomed into a stunning Balinese village house, overlooking rice paddies. All ingredients are sourced from their traditional home. The whole family takes part and our kids loved getting hands-on in the outdoor, open kitchen. You will leave very satisfied and full of delicious home cooked Balinese cuisine.

Don’t miss it - Our host Putu was kind, informative and a good teacher. She accommodated one of our family who is vegan. The drive to her village and the opportunity to tour a family compound were both very interesting. This was a highlight of our trip.

Kitchen in nature - An unforgettable experience with Putu and his cousin Made. We discovered Balinese cuisine in the middle of a small paradise where the ingredients we cook grow. The recipes are made from simple ingredients but are no less tasty. No liked the kindness and warm welcome of Putu who made us discover his house, garden and kitchen. A beautiful gateway to traditional Balinese culture.

Fantastic experience 😍 - I did the cooking class with Putu this afternoon. If I could have given it 10 stars I would have! Absolutely brilliant tour. Putu was so kind and caring the whole time. Her family compound where the class is held is just beautiful and their vegetable garden is impressive. The class itself was fantastic and the food so delicious- and so much! I got to take a lot with me. Next time I will also stay in their beautiful Air b’n’b - looks so good. I would highly recommend this cooking class! Thank you Putu - keep shining your light ☀️🥰
