Rushed and a rip off... - I very rarely give low reviews, but I feel very angry about this tour, we booked it because it was on my 50th Birthday and there were so many things wrong with the entire day I just need to air my thoughts with other travellers. This tour cost 2 of us a total of £317.00, which is just not worth it. I would think twice if you were considering booking this trip. At the start of the day, our minibus was late by 30 minutes, so from the very start, the tour was already on to a rush. The driver drove the minibus like a maniac, very fast, dangerous and on several occasions, a few of us on the trip had to ask for him to slow down, which he didn’t. I don’t care if this is how people drive in Mexico, when you have 10 guests on a paid tour, health and safety should always be paramount no matter where you are in the world. Our first stop was at Tulum, we were in the ruins for around 1 hour, that was ok, it isn't a huge site to get around and our tour guide was very good telling us about the history of Tulum which was very informative. After Tulum we were carted off to the local town where there was an opportunity to do a bit of gift shopping, we had around 45 minutes here and was told there was a taste test lined up on the Tequila stand which we participated in. We were going to buy a bottle and was excepting to pay around $40-$50 for a bottle, when he quoted us $129 per bottle, we laughed and just left empty handed. Our next stop was at one of the Cenote caves, we were taken to Cenote el sueño and to get there, it was up what felt like a 2 mile uneven dust track and with our race driver at the wheel, a number of us on the tour were very concerned at how fast he was driving along the uneven lane with a number of us getting injured along the way, I hit my head and elbow on the glass window so this was no exaggeration. At the caves, we were really excited about this part of the tour, it was something special to remember on my 50th birthday, or so we thought! We were then told, there were no changing areas, and no cameras allowed, so my hopes and wishes of this section of the tour just collapsed, we were told the owners will take our pictures for us (for a small fee). The pictures were pathetic, they made us pose stupidly by the water with full body shots of us in our bathing suits doing silly poses, not one was even taken with us in the water. The swim itself was wonderful, the water was crystal clear and if I had had my own underwater camera with me, I would have been able to have taken my own lovely shots of us together, but this was denied so I have no logged memory of my 50th birthday at Cenote. The reason why I have no logged memory of Cenote is due to their greed. The pictures we were shown at the end were amateur, immature and just awful shots of us and to top this off, they wanted to charge us $70 for them, I asked how much for just one, I was quoted $50! I’m not a stinge on holiday but I know when I’m being ripped off and this was one of those moments. Just before we set off to snorkel with the turtles, we were told that as there were no changing rooms at Cenote so we would just have to get back on the minibus in our swim wear to head for Akumal Beach, we were rushed back on the bus, and our driver headed us straight back down the roller coaster of the dust track at full speed. When we arrived in Akumal, we were parked up around 500m away from the beach, remember my earlier comment, we were not allowed to dress at Cenote, we were then told that there were also no changing areas at the beach, so we had to walk through the town in our swim wear with the men of the town standing in groups gawping and having all our modesty taken away from us, I was furious! There is no way I would ever walk around the streets in my underwear, but this is exactly what they expected me to do. The turtles were lovely to see but there were just too many people doing the snorkelling all at the same time, and the turtles don’t actually swim with you, they are feeding at the bottom of the ocean so it was just like being in the centre of a cattle market and the magic was just taken away. The meal at the end of the trip was ok, very tasty but after our meal and after being told coffees were included, they chased after me to pay $6 for 2 lattes, lattes are a coffee?? Overall, the tour was rushed, a rip off and not a great experience at all. I have discussed my comments with TUI and they have been great, the tour is not run by TUI and is outsourced so I think they should look for other operators to conduct this tour for them or at least send a mystery shopper every now and again to ensure the tours are run at an acceptable standard.
