Good experience - It was a great experience. The guide, the assistant and the driver were nice and service oriented. The guide was great, knew a lot. I was recommended by reviews to NOT buy the insect repelent, great advice, smells awful and you don't need it.

Great places, little time! - Of course, my plan for my trip to Mexico also included a visit to Tulum and Coba. First we went to Tulum. An archaeological park that you should definitely see if you are traveling to Mexico and the view of the sea from this location was also fantastic. Then we went to Coba. I particularly liked this place (much nicer than Tulum). It is located in the jungle and therefore nice and shady. There are an incredible number of great ruins to visit and the places scattered throughout the forest mean that it doesn't seem so crowded. The problem with the tour was that you only had very little time for this place and were therefore forced to rent a rickshaw or a bike if you wanted to see the largest ruins within the time limit. So I rented a rickshaw and must say the driver was super friendly, even gave me all sorts of interesting information, showed me the Mayan bees and asked me at each stop if he should take a photo of me (since I was traveling alone). Incredibly nice! We then continued to a Mayan village. There was a cleansing ceremony by a shaman (in the middle of the souvenir shop, so that you don't forget to spend your money there). Afterwards there was a really delicious lunch buffet, but you had to pay extra for drinks, but that was known beforehand. At this location you could also go swimming in the cenote. Unfortunately I didn't go in the water because I got sunburnt on my back from several snorkeling tours the previous days :-D . The cenote and the water looked fantastic though. Finally there was a stop in Playa del Carmen. However, since my hotel is located in the middle of "downtown" Playa Del Carmen, I said goodbye to the group at this point. Playa del Carmen is a really nice shopping paradise, full of bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and stores from all the well-known chains. However, I doubt that there would have been enough time during the tour to look around a bit. POSITIVE: - the visit to Tulum and Coba - the Mayan village was very nice to spend time in - the tour is relatively inexpensive - I met very nice people during the trip NEGATIVE: - you have relatively little time at each location - the tour guide was unfortunately SO bad at English (it was supposed to be an English-speaking tour) that only the bare essentials were translated and even the important departure times were very difficult to understand. Most of the tour was in Spanish (I don't speak Spanish.)

Avoid at all costs - I would not recommend booking through a 3rd party for this trip - it was difficult from start to finish. Firstly, we were staying in Tulum and were told that it would be okay to be picked up at the first stop. The rest of the group started in Cancun and getting picked up was okay - however, we were not able to go to the last stop in Cancun because the tour guides were unwilling to drop us off back in Tulum after. So, we were told to get off the bus at a red light when they were passing through Tulum or pay for our own trip back from Cancun. So, we got off the bus in the middle of the road and missed the last part of the tour although we paid for the whole thing. Second, when we were picked up we were told that we had not paid for the trip and were told to pay 3000 pesos in cash at pickup. We showed the receipts of payment online but were not believed. We did pay for entry park tickets (that we were aware of before starting) so they let us start the tour after paying that. The scary part started when we were about 2 hours from Tulum in the middle of nowhere when we were told we had to pay another 1500 pesos or they were leaving us behind. We were in contact with Adventours that were telling us we didn't owe anything and were in contact with the third party tour but the guides we were with were still trying to get us to pay. On top of it all, another guide who we had paid the original 1500 pesos to - told the other guides we had never paid him. After about 20 minutes of a standstill conversation, the bus started to drive away. We were still with one tour guide so we understood this to be a scare tactic and we still refused to pay. Eventually, the guide decided to be 'nice' and say we were even and let us back on the bus. When we got to the bus, the driver shut the door in our face and made us stand outside. The whole experience was horrific and avoidable. It also slowed down the tour for the 50ish other people on the tour who had no idea what was going on. I understand that per the third party they had on their record that we had not paid. However, there was no communication between Adventours and them to settle the payments among themselves.
